Post subject:  ethanol in VA

Our area has gone 100% ethanol - and so far only one batch that I got was wet enough to cause big problems.

The car wouldn't hardly, so I drained the tank and found the fuel turbid - I put some in the freezer and a water layer settled out. I drained what I could into a steel gas can and used acetone + isopropyl mix in the fresh E10 to flush the system - then I was OK.

When I went back to figure out what to do w/ the contaminated stuff, I found it'd eaten through the steel can and all leaked out.

Isn't it funny how they put new stuff in to gas for some reason or another and all the sudden it causes a hole bunch of problems and they have to take it out. that MTBE was nasty stuff.
MTBE was nasty, but it WORKED! Not only does it add oxygenate to make the EPA happy, it is a decent octane booster as well, and it doesn't screw up the vapor pressure of fuel. Yeah, it found all the questionable rubber in the fuel system, but its FAR less aggressive at attacking the fuel system than alchohols are. Too bad its so prone to get into groundwater :-/

...too bad it hasn't got its own well-funded lobby comparable to Archer Daniels Midland for ethanol. :-(
