Update to project list...I had some time with the engine today and I'm thinking a set of billet aluminum rocker arms are being added to my to do list...from what I'm seeing it won't take too much time on the CNC to knock out some nice rockers, maybe roller tipped.

Don,

There is a vendor on the market (Rocker Arm Specialists - RAS) that makes these to sell through the Cox Bros and maybe a couple other distributors. They are well made, but apparently do NOT have oil holes to the roller tip through the rocker body like the stockers do. They have also gotten fairly expensive. If you make a set (or more?), be sure to get oil to the tip or valve tips and rollers will wear out, as in the RAS units. Several people run oil spray bars inside the valve cover, which I think should be unnecessary if you oil the tip. I don't know why they didn't do that, but it has deterred me and others from buying them. Keep us updated...

Lou

Cool, I'll take a set in 1.6 ratio if you can swing the roller tip.

I keep thinking about building my own intake too. I only have a Miller 135 wire feed welder so I was thinking steel would have to do. I want to try tapered runners and was thinking I could cut some square steel tubing in half lengthwise and make long thin wedges to get the taper. The plenum could get tricky though. I probably should go EFI at the same time and not worry about a carb plenum. If the engine goes into this little brand X sports car I have the EFI fuel delivery system is already in place. Brand new Walbro 255LPH pump even.

Lou, I've heard of these rockers you referred to and have gotten the impression that I may be better off making my own (which will be reproducible since they will be CNC cut from billet aluminum). They will absolutely have the oil hole to the tip and if I'm going to go through the trouble of making them are going to have the roller tips. It looks like it may be a few weeks before I get to do much more than CAD them up but will of course keep the board updated to my progress as time permits.

Joshie, I imagine the initial ratio I make will be 1.6 and I plan to make a few sets to start with to see how well they go over. Again, I'll keep the board updated with my progress. The plenum I have in mind is actually quite easy to fabricate and should work great...no way of being sure till it's done and on the car but that will be the case soon enough. Sounds like you have a pretty good spread of projects yourself!

Thanks,
Don

One thing I've wondered: Why does aluminum seem to be the material of choice when it comes to intake fabrication? Is it just because it's lighter than steel and less likely to corrode? Are there any inherent disadvantages to using steel?

I thought I heard over a year ago that the design was revised and the RAS aluminum roller rockers now oiled just like the stock ones. Does anyone here know for sure? (short of calling the Cox Bros.)

CStryker- As far as why...I'm sure there are plenty of correct answers to that...my personal answers would mostly be weight, heat transfer & corrosion properties, and ease of working with...not to mention the fact that it polishes up real nice!

Patrick- I haven't heard about the revisions (not sure if anyone else has) but perhaps my main reasons for making them myself is the cost factor and ability to make them how I want them.

Thanks,
Don
