Ford and GM in particular do some really cheesy, cut-price implementations on the lighting wiring.

Oh, gawd, don't let's get into VW electrics (Must...control...fist...of...death!). Total garbage. And yeah, they had problems with (amongst many other things) brake light switches. Wanna know why? Aside from them being VW, I mean? It's because right up through the '90s they were still using those stone-age hydraulic pressure switches the rest of the auto industry gave up on decades ago.
