I saw a chart on Moparts that has engine weights, and it states that the slant six and 273-340 V8's weigh the same, is this true? If so, wouldnt you actually drop weight by going with a 340 w/ aluminum intake, aluminum heads,headers.....etc...???

Sure you could, but I'm talking stock for stock (not like I've seen a stock 340 in a junkyard in over 25 years either)...aka you plunk $350 for a good running stock 360 out of a truck, and swap for the "poor little six"... the weight is "close" but with the slant you have some other variables to play with like a possible stock aluminum intake, the fact a Holley 1945 weighs nothing like a Holley 2245 (like Jenny Craig would say those lbs. do add up). mostly charts like that are a quick reference and not for the definitive "weight of a slant six (forged crank, late head, iron two barrel intake, Carter BBD, automatic kickdown attached)" vs. "weight of a 340, 1973 cast crank, some poor schmuck put an iron intake on it from a 360 back in 1978 while parting it together from swap meet/junkyard deals, stock manifolds, Holley Dominator,etc...)

I mean heck, a stock 360 can weigh as much as a nicely dressed out big block (aluminum heads, intake, headers, 400 block made into a 451...etc...), but the tangent was about "giving back" the weight savings in the Feather Duster, by quickly dropping in a V-8 over the aluminum weight saver options (the 1976 body even with the "aluminum parts" is still a "fat" car with the bumper shocks intact, crash bars, etc...compared to the early Dusters).

67 valiant signet - 2765#

would that be a comaparable weight to the 100 or 200?

How about I just buy a v-100 and roll the thing on to the scale and be done with it. I can just go from there. Im sure I can lose all the weight I need to.

The signet is the "high end car", so you will have fender mounted turn signals, aluminized chrome trim all over the car (and across the dah board), along with carpet instead of the rubber/plastic floor covering in the V-100, also the seats may have cloth inserts instead of all Vinyl...I have also seen a Signet recently with a 170 slant six, so you may have to swap engines.

'67 is also a cheap year car too, as there are many trim items and parts that are a "one year only" item, gladly they came with dual pot master cylinders...

Good luck on your project hope it comes together for you...

I know you were talking stock for stock,I was just curious about the whole weight thing :D I have a Dart Lite, and was wondering what I could do to make it lighter.

What are my options when it comes to the bumpers and bumper shocks? Would I be able to tuck everything in,and drop all of the 'shocks' to make it look more like a '73? I love my Dart and all of the cool little aluminum brackets and such, but dont really care for the bumpers that stick out 3 feet  If not am I able to get a new bumper shock? The drivers side it crushed in from a hit,and I am not sure how to fix it?

Actually, you will find it is very hard to lose a lot of weight out of an A-body without spending lots of money.

:?: Hey Rob, I've still got some research to do, but if my memory serves me correctly, you could, at one time, purchase a Simca through a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge dealer. It would make for good conversation in the Tech line if true. We had a gent show up with a Bantam bodied, Hemi powered AA/FA at our show with a little timeline on how Bantam begat the Willys/Overland begat the Jeep etc etc. Kinda cool!! Hey Rick,

Tom and I had talked about the Simca being "kinda sorta" a Mopar body of sorts quite awhile back, but the South Georgia Mopar show was more strict about the "Mopar Body" rule. There was also a nice VW Bug with a 360 in it that they wouldn't let compete. Maybe now that they have moved the event to the new track in Valdosta things have changed. Tom replied to your other post and said that they have actually not had any problems entering the Simca in any Mopar Only events. They didn't wind up attending the South Georgia event that year that I was thinking of.

Lightest A bodies are the Plymouth Valiants and Dusters. They are lighter than their Dodge counterparts due to having a shorter wheelbase and a bit less std trim.

Here are the shipping (not actual) weights of the lightest A body, broken down to 4 generations.

gen1; '60-'62
'62 V100 2dr sedan, 2480

gen2; '63-'66
'63 V100 2dr sedan, 2515

gen3; '67-'69
'67 V100 2dr sedan, 2655 (beating the '69 V100 by 1 lb)

gen4; '70-'76
'70 Duster, 2790

Shipping weight is based on the std model, no options, minimun fluids. While not a true, or accurate number of real world, they can be used to compare weights of different models/years, eg, a '70 Duster with the same general options will be approx 310 lbs more than a '62 V100.

I wonder how hard it would be to fit a slant drive train in an 89 Shadow?

About the same as an '85 Turismo.

You have to mount some sort of a rear end by either leaf springs, ladder bars, four-link, etc.

The steering will need to be re-worked. I have some photos and articles that talk about what is required.

The firewall area will need to be re-worked/cut out and a transmission tunnel put in.

The job is/was beyond my capabilities, so I enlisted the help of a competent welder/chassis builder.

Our Turismo isn't done yet. It has the 8 3/4 mounted on leaf springs, 8 point roll cage installed, and the steering has been modified (not sure if that part will work right yet). We still need to fit the Slant 6 and transmission and see what else needs to be moved around to accomodate it.

It's not a quick weekend job and will require some welding/fabrication skills, but it is doable.

Post subject:  Quite a Doable Project

:D Jimbo, I ran your idea on doing a Dodge Shadow race car past a friend of mine who builds race cars. He said the easiest way would be to use the car to templete a complete frame and cage and then remove the unibody and mount the body to the new assembly. He remembers a Super Stock GT class Shadow with a small block that was a bit more complex, since it needed to retain as much of the original floor and firewall as possible. It had a tough time on marginal tracks due to its short wheelbase, but on a good track it was a real pocket rocket!!! Hey Rob, I had an idea for a late fifties/early sixties SIMCA with a full chrome moly frame, a maxed out aluminum slant six and a five speed. Betcha that would come in as a flyweight. Oh well, back to the real world now....RICK

Hey Rick, that's the story of my life: Big dreams,... small realities! That's why I'm selling off all of my cars I've been collecting over the last 15+ years. I've finally come to realize that it just ain't gonna happen. Maybe I can make enough on the 10 cars I'm selling to put together one decent race car.
