Last year Erik (MPG Fanatic) and I, built a 170 for his 64 Valiant, with three on the tree. We cut the deck to .005, bored .060 and honed with a block plate. Balanced the rotating assy. MP 243 cam, installed at 102 if I remember right. Erik has the actual numbers, but I think the head was cut to get a measured 9.0 or 9.5, don't remember which. Stock single sxhaust and 1bbl holley carb. Just talked to him last week. He said after about 6,000 miles and one valve adj, he is getting 28 mpg. on the highway. This car is a semi daily driver.

I wonder why it's no longer available from MP. Well as long as I can get one from Doug, I'm good. Think it'd be wise to replace the lifters and pushrods while I'm in there as well? I'm already planning on installing a timing chain & gear set.

MP sell almost nothing for the \6 any longer.

You do need to install new lifters with a new cam. You can check the pushrods for straightness by rolling each (cleaned) rod across a flat piece of plate glass.

I recently rebuilt my SL6 per Doug Dutra's suggestions for torque and mileage. It has worked out very well! I had my stock cam reground by Delta Cams in Tacoma to what they call a 254S .435 lift which is very close to the 252 .435 lift Comp Cam grind. It makes the rebuild much easier when they grind off the back side of the lobes to create the added lift. I had enough milled off the head .060 and block .060 to compensate for what they ground off the cam. After break in I adjusted the lifters three times and at 10,000 miles they are dead on .010 and .020. The power is far better than stock and mileage is good if I don't push it to hard. However, it is so much more fun to drive it is a great temptation to push it.
The rebuild was simple and very close to stock. Doug has suggested hardened seats, street porting, gasket matching and balancing, advancing the cam 4 derees, etc.
I must say this rebuild was very practical and has made alot more power even though I am still running 1.5" exhaust and the 1920 Holley. Doug had suggested getting rid of the 1945 Holley (my motor is a 1974) and replacing it with the 1920.
I couldn't be happier! That was a ecellent suggestion!
I drive 120 miles a day through the foot hills of Puget Sound from Black Diamond to Everett and back. For a single barrel set up the power is awesome and hills just melt away.
I am looking forward to the Dutra Duel conversion and a Super Six set up.
