Looser setting means less overlap, and more cylinder pressure, and more low end torque. I always ran my stock cams at .015 intake and .025 exhaust.
I got excellent mileage, in the twenties, and the sound was just that sweet clatter of good solid cams. One advantage is that out of spec ones tend to stand out more, and really rap audibly.

After switching to .010 and .020, it went way up!

So thats double weird! :roll:
Interesting! I just thought mine went down because I drilled out my jets :lol:

I'll hafta try loosening them bit by bit to see if that affects mileage (and performance) at all for me. I figure I could start with the exhaust valves and leave the intakes where they're at for now, then once I find a good setting for the exhaust valves, work out the best setting for the intakes...

I was getting 20-22 without the air. I drilled out the jets and it dropped to 16.7. Best mileage I got with the stock 1 bbl and head with a cracked exhaust manifold and the same mufflers was 29.5 at 65mph. Most of the time it got 25.5. All my mileage has been on 93 octane.

Okay I've now got my valves set at 0.012 and 0.022. I'll slowly enlarge the gap in my exhaust valves until I see negative effects on my gas mileage, and then set them to what gave me the best mileage. Then I'll do the same with the intake valves. Hopefully this will help me find the best setting for my valves. I have a feeling I'm going to go through quite a few valve cover gaskets in the process here :roll:

3M weather strip adhesive on the valve cover, and wheel bearing grease on the head side of the gasket. Old air cooled VW trick. You have to set the valves on a bug every 2000 miles.

Not to hi-jack your post but what would a good cold lash setting be after assembling a new motor. Maybe .008 and .018? then hot lash after break-in?

Jopapa,

Let me know if your mileage changes with the wider lash.
Run another can of Seafoam through it too.
