You should do a visual check, but vacuum leaks can easily hide. If you don't find them by looking, you'll need to hunt them with the engine running, as well.

Mind the fan and belt. They bite.

Sam, when you removed the pistons did you use a ridge reamer before pulling them? You can break them that way if you don't cut the carbon and wear ridge off.

I think preignition can break the edge of the piston and crack rings. Also melt the piston tops.
