engine electrical problems- actually carb blockage

Ok, thanks for all the help guys. I dont have a vacuum advance style distributor so I'll have to get one from the pick-a-part yard. Not sure when I get to doing that. It's so frustrating that I can get it to start and run for a few seconds( sometimes up to 10), then it just shuts off. I'm determined to figure this thing out. I looked in the bowl and it's now at least half full. Way more gas in there then when I started.
Oh yea the debris that was in the float bowl was in fact charcoal from the canister. Looked over by the canister and it's all around the area where the hoses hook to it.
Well I guess the truck will just have to sit till payday, so then i can get it towed home.
If anyone can think of what I'm missing or maybe knows what might work I'll be checking the forum until payday.

Rule of thumb: If your charcoal canister ever decides to blow it's contents all over, then make sure to do a REALLY, REALLY, good cleaning to remove it all from all the inside passages of the carb. Took apart the carb again just to make sure it was really clean and I hadn't missed anything. Upon close inspection couldn't find anything. But used some carb cleaning and blew back thru all of the passages in reverse of how it normally flows. Put it all back together and it runs and revs better than it ever did. Now just have to go back and reset all the set screws.

That why need a filter between emissions can and the carb's vent.

STILL have to have emissions can installed get a replacement and a big inline filter to prevent particules getting into carb again.

What kind and part number filter do you use to stop the charcoal particles from going into the float bowl????

Plain old fuel filter will do the job.

NAPA 3001 (with 1/4" hose nipples), 3002 (5/16") or 3003 (3/8"). These are see-through plastic filters. I don't like them for filtering actual fuel, but when you want to be able to check if they're clogged up with charcoal bits, they're perfect!
