Post subject:  Don't die

Jim Cox is a good guy. Hope he can help you with the stuff you need.

As for the stock cam profiles, there are 3 that I recall, but I don't know the specifics well. Unless I'm mistaken, all the various displacements used the same cams and steel crank and cast crank motors interchange cams. Hopefully someone will take pitty and point out a link to a data sheet.

In short, the early cams are mild, I think they changed to a slightly less mild cam some time in the early 70's, but can't recall the year. The change is not enough to warrent a great deal of interest, but if you have the motor in pieces and can pick which one, it seems that the later cam is generally agreed to be better by default.

The only other cam is the hydrolic lifter cam that was introduced after 1980. The hydrolic cam will not work properly in the older style motors due to lack of oiling for the hydrolic lifters.

All the factory cams are mild. LOTS of choices for aftermarket cams depending on your goals.

Keep asking questions.

.411 or .414 sounds like the stocker in my 72 That was the highest lift. A sort of RV type grind. More lift that a silly 318 cam.

If you're gonna put a good head on the motor don't even bother with a stock cam. You will be very disappointed with the results. :(

Well I'm going with an erson or comp cam threr is a point in Doc's build of "Tiggy" that the cam drive gears are off so I was thinking about a regrind? Who did you get that 280 erson for 210 from  ?

The inaccuracy of timing gear marks is not likely to be solved by regrinding the cam. The cam may be inaccurately ground, but the regrind is likely to be in pretty much the same place. In addition to that, the gears are also often inaccurately marked. Sometimes the errors add, sometimes they subtract. Occasionally they will exactly cancel and the marks will line up at the correct position. The only way to be sure is to degree the cam/gear combination.

The group buy from Erson is, as far as I know, still ongoing. Search for the thread to get the information. I got my 270 for about 130.00 delivered.

I'll search for the treaed soon. thats a good deal, what all came with the cam? I curious if you got lifters and springs with that or just the cam because thats a really good price  .

IIRC, that was cam only. I think lifters were another $50 or so. :D

Yes, that was cam only. I had already bought lifters and springs.

The group buy from Erson was still goin on a month ago, I belive the cam itself was 130. The 210 was for; cam, lifters, matchin springs(that arent supposed to need machining to fit), and shipping.
