I just went and had a look at my spare and - yep- I am right. topside of the world must be different.

is the only place to get the lefthanded drill bits, from the tool dealers?

I'm making a trip to harbor freight today, but something tells me I'm barking up the wrong tree there:)

Pretty sure the same heads were used up here as down there. Casting numbers 2206035 through '67, don't know if you got 2843169 down there, but think you did through the end of Australian-market slant-6 usage in '69.

The only studs that go into water are the end ones.

Rod, did you try poking in the holes with a small screwdriver? I mean really poking. There might be crud buildup in the the back of the hole. Just curious. It might even be a situation, of the machining being done in different plants.

I have a left hand kit that is the same as Snap-On, except it is in a Hanson case. Hanson makes Snap-On and Blue Point tools for them.

HF tools are very hit or miss. I have gotten great bargains and also poor to no quality. I only buy whats on sale that I know will see lite duty. HF drill bits are junk. Sorry about the HF rant. I would try the procedure that rock outlined above. My LH drills are snap-on, 5 piece kit #DBCL105A listed at snap-on.com for $45.60. You do pay for the name , I needed mine bad and they cost me a bit more but you pay for the convince of buying off the truck. You could probably find them on line in a less expensive brand but of similar quality. good luck TopHat

Dan,what is the truth of this? do all the studs go thru to water or are the centre ones on my spare just full of crud? I seem to remember reading in here (I think here) that the 2 end ones go thru...... ? do I have to re-ajust my knowledge base? regards,Rod

The only studs that go into water are the end ones. I have a left hand kit that is the same as Snap-On, except it is in a Hanson case. Hanson makes Snap-On and Blue Point tools for them. I also have a Snap-On tap and die set in metric, and a Hanson in standard. Same case, different printing, different price. I do have gobs of Snap-On tools though from when we actually had a dealer that came around every week. The last guy got lost in a cocaine snowstorm and went bankrupt. Snap-On refused to take my money that I owed him, so I got a few hundred bucks of tools free. Makes up for my volt-meter that he never brought back.

The one head is my old stock eliminator head, the other is my "big valve" head. They are both drool tube heads. Maybe the peanut plug heads are different. Pretty sure the head on my Cuda is the same. I installed all new studs in that head, and used locktite sealer on all the threads.

Hmmmmmm, I'll have to see if I have any drool tube heads off at the shop this weekend. I'm pretty sure my peanut heads only have water at the ends.

Quote: do all the studs go thru to water That depends on how many previous owners have attempted to extract how many broken studs from how many holes with hammer drills and phasers set on 11! I'm pretty sure only the end studs go through to the water passages, but I can't say for sure that there aren't some head variants on which non-end studs back up on water passages, too.

I don't know if this helps, but ~20 years ago at Michigan State U. I snapped a tap off in a blind hole in an expensive part - the machine shop at the MSU engineering dept. had a machine that used an electric arc to burn the tap away w/o damaging the aluminum part ot all. If you can find somebody w/ such a machine, it might be worth the effort.

I sure did. even lightly tapped said screwdriver into bottom of holes with a little hammer,and all except the 2 end ones are solid as rocks. and I do'nt think they would all have broken studs in 'em. so we all "agree to disagree"? regards,Rod

All I know is that the head I currently have on my bench has all its stud holes open to water. It sounds like there are some of both floating around.

I have had good luck with LH drill bits from Travers (www.travers.com) and they are relatively cheap. I think they are made in Bosnia.
