Yeah, you get to pick either the pre-'70s OE type that works well but has a relatively low current limit before things start burning up, or the post-'70s OE-type that has a high current limit and doesn't work! :shock: There are good aftermarket ammeters, and there are various ways of building an "active shunt" that protects the early-type ammeter from overcurrent...

Ammeter, with a diode shunt. It's trickier still to make a voltmeter look like my original sideways-mounted ammeter.

If I were completely redoing my dash, I might consider a voltmeter (or an aftermarket ammeter). But I'm leaving the stock dashboard in at the moment, and don't like the idea of a dead gauge in the dashboard.
