If you happen to get a good one, great, you're a lucky guy and you're all set for however long it lasts. The problem is, quality is generally poor and it's a big unknown, because the "remanufacturing" generally takes place on an assembly line somewhere you can't visit, under the control of some corporation you can't talk to. You cannot depend on getting a good one, and the fancy warranty certificates "remanufactured" parts are sold with do not imply anything about the quality of the part...just the inventiveness of its marketeers.

I would never buy any "HARD" part from Auto Zone or any discount place like that, i've never had luck. When I rebuilt my last slant I went to the local Auto Zone. Ordered a crank the first one that came in was a cast crank so I took it back then they ordered another with "spec. verifying" to make sure it wa all in check, they said it was. So when I got it the bearing tolerances of 2 of the rod's were to big. So I measured it they ground 4 of them @ .30 and 2 of them @ .40 so they told me the only thing they would do was give me rod bearings to fit the over ground rod's. I raised hell and they gave me my money back. And to make a long story a little longer, I went to a local machine shop and had my original crank ground and all the spec's were wonderfully the same.

What really bothers me is that all these discount places and remanufacturing places are using Chinese crap parts and I don't want Chinese parts in my motor or anywhere else on my car.You have to look closely ,I bought ball joints for my 66 valiant this past summer and they were Federated brand.I figured they'd be American but they were Chinese so I ebayed them off to some fool who didn't care at a loss just to be rid of them.

These remanufactured block's unfortunatly they use whatever parts are cheapest right now. So one day they may get some good quality parts because their just cheap at that date or you could end up getting some tolerences in inches chinese parts simply because they are the cheapest available at the time. 650 does sound like a decent price for what he's gotten done but It's still at remanufactured engine.

I would strongly consider it, the price is good considering AZ is listing a long block at 1300~1999 now. If you know what you are looking at, ask to pull the pan and a few rods and mains and measure them up. Might be a good idea to take an oil pan gasket to help convince him to let you pull the pan. At that price, the trans would be gravy. Around these parts, it is easy to drop 500~650 just at the machine shop by the time you are done. Of course around here the shops think all think everyone has a nascar budget.

I would pull it down and measure it before you run it, a gasket set is cheaper then blowing it up.

About 12 years ago my best friend bought a Discount Auto Parts furd 300 long block. We put in a gruman bread truck in the street in front of his house. That engine lasted for 70 or 80 thousand miles before he wrecked the truck. Never missed a lick, and he is in NO WAY "kind" to his vehicles.

just my 2 cents worth

good luck
