Also check the rubber hose at the tank and the inlet of the fuel pump. If there is a hole/split, it will not pull fuel from the tank.
I didn't think of this. Thanks Charlie.

Ok I tried to start the car again last night. unsuccesfully.

I couldn't get any gas through the lines from the tank so I ran 8FT of rubber fuel line to a 5 gal can of fresh gas and attached the other end to the fuel pump. She is getting plenty of fuel now when you crank it, but she will only hit when you hold the pedal flat on the floor. She will run for 10-15 seconds but never over 1500 rpm's and if you lift your foot off the floor it will die immediately.

Anyone have any ideas?

You might be getting gas TO the carb but if the jets, passages, etc are clogged inside the carb gas can't get thru the carb.

You’ve already checked to see if it’s getting spark didn’t you? Make sure the points are clean and gapped correctly. The distributor cap isn’t wet on the inside or has a crack in it. If it’s dark you can try starting it and see where the spark is jumping that it shouldn’t.

Did it run fairly well at 1500 RPM or was it spitting, popping, belching with smoke out the back?

It is getting gas through the carb, I can see it dripping down in there, and it gives is a squirt when you punp the throttle.

The cap and points are new and set correctly. I will double check them again.

Could my float be set incorrectly and it is keeping it flooded out?
How do you check it?

Thank you all for your ideas. I can't wait to get her back on the road where she belongs. 8)

Careful there-be absolutely SURE that there is no power to the ignition system when you do this---- any gas that does blow out of the cylinders, and 1 errant spark, it could be interesting to say the least. FIRE! Also if you flooded it bad enough for the plugs to have a shiny "glaze" to them, put another set of plugs in there- once they are gas fouled it WILL NOT run. Ask me how I know that one! :?

Extremely good suggestion. Sorry I forgot about that. I did mine with a remote starter and the ignition switch turned off. Otherwise I think you'd take either of the wires off of the coil -- I'll let someone else say for certain. You want to make sure your spark plug wires, AND the coil wire are not sparking when it turns over.

Geez. That's scary to think about.

Volaredon is right about the wet plugs too. I wash them off with laquer thinner and blow them off. They need to be extremely dry. New ones would be better but I like to make sure it's not going to wet them first.

Another thought... If you can hear fuel trickling down into the intake after you first stop cranking, you can skip all of that messy dangerous stuff and just fix the carburetor.

Fantastic ideas here fellas. My next day off I will try these things and let you know how it went..

You can look directly down the carburetor with a flashlight just after cranking the engine and probably see or hear fuel dripping. It shouldn't be doing that
It does drip after cranking, I remember seeing it.

Thanks guys!

Well I put a new tank, pickup and fuel lines on it and a friend came over to help me adjust the valves and rig a later model carb on it for now. The rocker arms were extremely loose and we found 3 bent pushrods. Once they were replaced it ran pretty decent.

I have a squeak coming from the power steering pump and an exhaust leak at the donut. I put some break fluid in it (bone dry) and tooled it around the neighborhood a little bit. :D Thank you guys for all the help!

Do you have any recomendations on where to find the exhaust donut and power steering pump?

I don’t think it has an exhaust doughnut - it’s just a flat gasket and they are all the same. You should be able to get it at any parts store.

You should be able to get the power steering pump also. First, make sure it is full of fluid and the belt is tight - both will cause a squeak. If the fluid is empty, the level will go down after you turn the wheels back and forth a few times. You may have to fill it twice.

Thanks Danny. I called Advance about the filter and they head 2 in stock. I forgot they have been making these things forever.

I took the belt off and the noise seems to be coming from some slop in the pulley It is making a metallic sound. Advance says they have the pulley and pump for $62 but cannot get the reservoir I thought it was all one piece.??
