It's the 64 Plymouth Valiant listed in my signature. I do have a FSM. I often forget about it, even though I reference it for everything on my Rambler. Looking throught the FSM I have a BBS 3675, 3676 or 36815. It is also missing the sping staged choke according to thier illustration. |

In '64, only (most of) the carbs used on the 170 engines had the spring-staged choke with 2-piece choke lever. The 225s had a regular 1-piece choke lever. The best quality kit for a Carter BBS is a Walker # 15483A. Second preference would be the Standard-Hygrade kit #1636. |

Thanks Dan. I will start my search for the Walker kit. My engine is the 170, so should I try to acquire a spring stage choke or leave it as is? |

Don't worry about the choke. Whether or not it has the 2-piece lever has only minimal effect on engine starting, and only at extremely cold temperatures. The only way to swap a spring-staged choke onto a carburetor not originally so equipped is to swap the whole air horn assembly. The spring-staged choke went away altogether by about '69. And, it is quite likely your '64 hasn't still got its original carburetor. Is there a stamped aluminum tag held onto the carburetor by one of the front bowl screws? |

No, I can tell someone's been into the carb at some point since there is thin aircraft wire or something to that effect is holding some of the linkage in place. |

I just went thru the same problem with my 87 dodge pickup. Replaced the coil and it still did the same thing, could not get above 15mph and it was getting worse. It turned out to be the screen on the pickup tube in the fuel tank. I took the fuel line from the tank off of the fuel pump and blew air back thru the hose(be sure to open the fuel cap), now I can get up to 45 mph. I dropped the tank and pulled the pickup tube out and the screen looked pretty bad. I ordered a new one today at the dealer, tried every part store in town and none of them carried it. Bad thing about the dealer is you have to order a whole new pickup tube and sensor just to get the screen. Won't get the part until Friday, so hopefully I will be back on the road this weekend |

That's where this board comes in handy for saving you a whackload of money. As has been posted before, you can get just the new screen from General Motors under part number 5651 705 . Less than $10 from www.gmpartsdirect.com , maybe a buck or two more if you buy locally but then no waiting and no shipping.
