No secret recipe....

Dennis just adds .001 to the prescribed gap. There is your expansion.

I promise you it is way more accurate to do a static valve set......set it cold....check it hot.

I dont adjust my clutch with it running either......

And I promise you I disagree. :-)

But does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight?

thought I would join in.

I set my valves hot and engine running. 10 and 20

Just a few points:

It didn't make a mess, got a good look at how the top end was being oiled!

Took a while so give your self some time, I went through them 3 times.

Is this way good for everyone............No

I say this because even with a dead slow idle you don't get much time for the 'feel' in between valve movements.

For me this way is good, but running a close second would be engine hot but shut down.

After this horseshyt is done can we start an aluminum head thread.

My race cams are all set dead cold. I would think clearance would be way more critical on a .550"+ lift 300* duration cam than on the weak suck crap that's in a stock moder.

If you want to know the easiest way to do something ask the laziest phocker you can. That would be me. I do it dead cold.

Just did the ones on the red car today. Dead cold. Runs fine.

But hey, do whatever way makes you happy.

While I'm no expert on slant 6 valve adjustment , I have over 40 years experence ,adjusting solid type valve adjusters, on motorcycles, All are set cold and it changes not a witt when hot. Is probably not the only time people in the field, have disagreed with a factory procedure.

When a person ask a simple question on a procedure such as this they usually don't have the experience like some of you have, and are usually asking for a simple answer to their question. For the life of me I don't understand why it isn't left at that, unless the information is incorrect.
Responses such as this , "After this horseshyt is done", "weak suck crap that's in a stock moder" are childish, uncalled for and serves no purpose.
Furthermore if what you write cannot be spelled in properly, "horseshyt", "phocker" are most likely innapropriate for a forum such as this.
It is sad that such a minor question and answer became totally lost to such foolishness.

I lash mine cold on a rebuilt engine for obvious reasons

But I am also quite lazy and don't want to mess around bumping an engine to lash valves so I do it hot and running.

Maybe I just want a planishing hammer?? BTW: don't use copper feeler gauges, they just can't take a running valve train!

Because there is more than one way to adjust valves. This goes on about once a month, every month.

OK Mr. TYM. Spelling lesson noted.

The cams in stock moders are weak suck.

Are you new here? Most everyone on this board knows that a lot of what goes on here is 'tongue in cheek'.

The OP wanted to know how to adjust his valves and has been given more than one option. It's up to him to decide what he wants to do.

My answer is still and will always be to adjust them dead cold.

Dan's will forever be hot and running.

We're good with that.

Now please go pee on someone else's leg and try to convince them it's the California rain. I ain't buyin'.

Huh? You mean there is more than one way to set valves besides hot and running? Come on, its a good thing to drag your knuckels across the adjusting nuts with the engine running!

Hey Frank,

I find this backing and forwarding SOOOOO funny - where is the popcorn?

Nah Mine is OK FOR NOW

The Factory said hot so do it hot - What I do is use one of those flexible 1/4 inch drive extensions - it absorbs most of the shaking. no problem.

But yes it is difficult to learn, yes you have to pre-gap your valves cold to get a new motor running but once learned it works - and hey I HATE turning the motor by hand - mind you that is where the smallblock crankbolt comes in handy..... if you want to do it cold - also the running motor give an indication if all is spot on -

From a noob. <me>
I did it the first time about a month ago, and did it running, just because i was following the service manual, and well, i'm a noob.

It really doesn't make a mess at all. I cut a piece of cardboard a little longer than the valve cover and about 3 inches higher than the valves, folded a lip on the bottom and rested it on the heater hose and spark plug wires.

Held the feeler in my left hand, and the box wrench in my right.
Did 4 runs on both the intakes and exhaust, since it was the first time and didn't want to screw anything up. She sounded great when i was done, no more loud obnoxious ticking, reverberating off of parked cars when i drive by.
