hello rugtruck- autozone will scan for free back to 95 cars . mine is an 88 and they dont do it or have the adapter for mine which is an 88. dont know about the other 2 you mention. thanks bob f

Only professional scanners will show the active status of sensors, the low end consumer scanner will only display diagnostic codes but not the transmission codes or active status.

Get the codes first with that jumper. You need data to start from there.

 Post subject: 2 questions on O2 sensor

1. I thought the O2 sensor was "binary" i.e. you get a signal (voltage) or you don't get a signal. Does the signal degrade over time?

2. Dan when you say the Bosch sensors are crap is pretty much all of them? How hard is it to get a "snap in" replacement for odd stuff? Several of my cars are 3-wire sensors and I dislike the "BYOC" (bring your own connector) O2 sensors. With the BYOC sensors I always worry about connections (they can't be soldered) and with the 3-wire sensors you are never quite sure on the what connects to what.

Yes. See my comments further up the thread. O2 sensors can fail rich, fail lean, fail centre, and with use they grow slow to react to changing exhaust gas oxygen content, thus slow to change voltage, thus giving a worthless signal even if it's within expected overall range.

Pretty much all Bosch sensors, except the extremely costly original-equipment items you don't find at the discount auto parts place.

Early 1990s Saab with 3-wire sensor. But you answer another question I've long wondered. Is the OEM Bosch sensor different from the AutoZone Bosch sensor and your response makes me think the answer is "yes"

Well it's one of those things I only did once (I learned my lesson) and the wires were marked differently it seemed non-trivial to me. I think you only get a 1/3 chance of getting right by guessing.

thanks sl6 sages, charlie dan and others. wish i could have made it up to ocala to get a code check, charlie, thanks for the offer. here is what i did. found out that bosch had the oem sensor for a few dollars mor(clint, 68?) and a cheaper universal sensor which would have necessitated doing a connector modification. bought and installed the oem sensor, disconnected and reconnected the battery to reset the computer. trouble light went out and has stayed out. engine seems to run a little smoother. acid test will be if the mileage goes up. too frugal to get clipped for 85 by dealer for scanner check then be tricked into numerous unnecessary repairs. interesting observation, i have noticed that due to the coming depression, most businesses are cutting prices, negotiating deals and offereing genuine bargains without strings, but not the automobile services sector/dealers. they offer no deals i have seen and in a number of observatons i have made are actually increasing the clipping and gipping of consumers. dont you love it when someone works so hard to live up to their reputation. lucky are those who still use sl6 vehicles as daily drivers and are shade tree mechanics. moe told me when you have to go to one of those places, grab your nose and grab your wallet. as was said in nam, give em hell. regards bob f
