Yep... I've had to do that same thing on a few cars I've owned... just need to pay attention to what gear you are in!

Rockauto shows a big spread in prices for the new starters, and the BBB website says they are a rebuilder, with their factory in Mexico. I wonder if they are simply re-part numbering another manufaturer's starter?

Any reason why the Bosch would be so much more expensive? I thought Bosch was licensing the name, not building their own. I'd guess all of them are built in China, just like the one I purchased from Mancini for $128.

Yeah that's about what I thought. I'd be replacing that NSS and double checking the circuit instead of modding it. It's an easy circuit to fix.

Before you dash off to the parts store, be careful for two reasons:

1. The off-the-shelf mini starter will not work on a '60-'61 car (or a '63-'66 Canadian-market slant-6). The drive pinion tooth count and diameter are wrong.

2. Bosch does not manufacture this kind of starter. It is a Nippondenso design; all such starters not manufactured by Nippondenso are either questionable "remanufactured" items in any of dozens of differently-branded boxes, or "100% new" Chinese copycat dreck.

Thanks SSD, I owe you one, well...prolly more than one (that carb is still on my shelf  ) I have looked in to mini-starters for my app. and have yet to find one, I was hoping to get the specs as a reference from the part # and do some checking...no need to now I guess :) Don't mean to jack the thread, but do you know of a mini that will work?

Yes, but I haven't had the chance to put it together yet! I have all the pieces...send me a PM.
