whats a package tray?...Im thinking of putting two 6x9's and leaving one open to channal the sub sounds from the trunk forward..(two 12's fit very nice behind the back seat,) Leaving the whole trunk still open to use.Quote: isnt one of those for a defroster option?
I do have a hole for a rail behind the speaker holes.. closer to the back window..maybe a motor/blower fit in one of the 6x9 holes??? wow I would love to have rear defrost too..

yeah, i think in some of them (like my 67 dart) there was only two holes and it was either one speaker and one defrost, two speakers no defrost, or in my case nothing...the defrost doesnt do a ton since it just blows cabin air back at the window as i understood, i could be making all this up though...the package tray is the particle board type piece that goes above the speakers, in mine the speakers i put in were too wide to drop in, so i got some thing bolts and mounted from the underside, may lose a little sound reflection, but i didnt want to take a grinder to it. you may want to consider upgrading other electrical things like the alternator if you go big back there, ive got two alpine type r 12's powered by a rockford amp (1080 rms) in my 05 stratus, and that can make the lights dim even with a capacitor... |

Without going out to look, I'm pretty sure there is a defroster slot in addition to the 3 6x9 oval speaker openings.

Yes there is..you know anything about them?? did they work and can they be replaced? Any aftermarket stuff made for them. I briefed through the repair manual but didnt see anything about back window defrost.....I wonder how big the unit was, might be something to consider before plugging up the works with stereo equipment. |

The A body has 3 6x9 holes in the back shelf, along with slit next to the rear window. The rear defroster uses one outer hole for intake and covers the central hole for exhaust to slit. The defroster is not usable when you want speakers in the rear shelf and is not much more effective then opening the drivers window and letting the breeze defrost the window. |

I have never actually seen a rear defroster installed on an early A-body car. I'm sure something could be fabbed though. |

So do all sedan type A-bodies up to 67. My 65 GT already has 3 6x9 speakers in it.... they are junk though...  ~THOR~ |

LOL, well I was thinking that the center hole would be a good place to mount a subwoofer, and the front speakers... well, Lets just say I've made a cool mod to some fresh air doors before...  ~THOR~ |

fresh air doors??? details details please.. I think mounting the sub(or subz:) in the trunk and leaving one 6x9 open should allow enough sound to travel..and still use the trunk as a second box Hey what about this..fresh air doors for the rear defrost rail. something you could open and close..and maybe even filter?? |

The 62 and earlier Lancer/Valiant don't have the "fresh air doors" of which he speaks. Later models have actual hinged doors about 6" square which can be open and closed to regulate fresh air flow. The 62 and earlier cars have a different, cable operated system. |

When the Tidewater Mopar Club restored our 1965 Barracuda, the original radio opening had been rudely hacked out long ago and the stock radio was missing. Our prez welded in new steel, and then I recut the hole for a DIN mount AM/FM/CD that worked and looked good (if not historically correct). The underdash speaker was a 6x9", and there was an empty defroster hole in the back of the car on the right that the other 6x9" speaker fit *absolutely perfectly*. I was told that the (already missing) defroster there would be as valuable as the car, and so we needed to fill the hole anyway. The front/rear stereo split was unusual, but seem to work just fine. I wired it so it could run w/o the key and we made a custom CD to play in it espousing the car's features and the charity. http://www.tidewatermoparclub.com/Givea ... /2001.html |

Here's what we did with ours. Now keep in mind our dash was already cut before we got the car. grrrr. So we did what we could. A friend of ours does modeling, so he molded and made this piece out of a strong resin material and we painted it a stainless pigment (real steel) to give it a vintage cast look. I then put 2 6x9's in the spots in the back and two 4" speakers in the front factory location with a bracket I made all ran off of a 4ch amp hidden neatly under the seat. The plate solely acts as a device to fill the hole, turn the amp on and off and a spot I can plug my MP3 player into.  Best pic I got at the moment.

Well, as mentioned your car doesn't have the fresh air doors, so this obviously wont apply to you, but basically, I block off the intake for the fresh air doors present on '63 and up cars, and either cut a hole in the door, or (preferebly) make a plate that fits neatly into the opening of the fresh air boxes, and cut/mount a speaker. A 4" round speaker works well. Plus, you can then close the air door... no one will ever know you put them in there.... well of course that is if the door stays closed... The compartment resulting from the fresh air block off makes a nice resonance chamber which goes up the firewall, and thus, through the roof. This gives those little 4" speakers the illusion of being something much nicer. That coupled with a pair of 6x9 in the back makes for a nice sounding system. ~THOR~ |

Under-the-dash options for a 63 and earlier car are limited. The dash is curved sharply down and has litte room behind and under it. The kick panels have very limited space behind then and the foot pedal e-brake interferes with surface mounted speakers. I've seen some creative solutions but they requires somewhat radical surgery that I wouldn't recommend. The best bet on an early A is in the door panels. |
