HEI everybody. I have bought the pieces I am going to use for my upgrade! After searching the internet for comparison on prices on new parts, I think the 12V E-core coil for most Ford applications is the 'best buy'. The coil is a Standard # DF-478, it is listed with prices starting as low as $14.75! It has ordinary flat cable connectors, but an attachment for cables is available from Standard, part # S-539. The coil looks more or less like its GM counterpart DR-35, I think the difference is mainly in the placement of the cable connectors. The price is much lower than DR-35, maybe because Ford used a remote mounted coil on most of their models, while GM used that thingie on top of their dizzycaps. No fear that the DF-478 won't deliver; it was also used by Mazda for the high-revving Wankel rotary engines! And now that we are in company with the italians, its good to know this coil was also used on several sporty Fiat models, so taking into consideration the latest 'marriage', it is kind of an original Mopart, capice? I will also use the GM compatible 4-cable ignition module mentioned by others here in the forum, also from Standard, part # LX-301. The module was listed on the internet with lowest price starting at $17.35. As a little tip for a heat sink: the two protruding plastic prongs on the module's back side are identical in measurement to the distance between the rods that connect the heat sink to a standing pentium III processor...

The prices for these part bought new over the counter here in Norway are of course a little higher than in the US - but still surprisingly low. On the other hand I will have the advantage of the warranty on a new part. I will rummage through my parts bin to see if I can find a suitable coil to dizzy cable, if no luck most ignition wire suppliers have them. I have relatively new Accel spark plug cables on the car now. I'll keep the old Mopar ignition parts mounted on my Aspen as they are, cables an all, just bypassing them. That way I can do a quick switch when measuring the differences as I document the upgrade. I will document all I do, and will post the text and pictures later, right now I've got some soldering to do...

I've got the pics and info and will be adding them to the HEI article shortly. The Ford coil is a perfectly good choice — that's great fitment and price info that'll also go well in the article. Keep the tips and findings coming, folks!

We use an Accell .6 ohm coil to get the best out of the HEI module. The HEI modules are good down to .5 ohms on your coil choice.

Hi lindross. That is very useful information. It is very difficult to find the info on the various coils before you buy, but it was my impression that all of the so called E-core coils made for use with 'ordinary' electronic ignition used on carburetted engines should have an inner resistance of 0.5 ohm. I also think old-style cannister type coils can be used with a resistor attached. I am not familiar with the specifications regarding coils made for use with computer controlled engine managements systems, those may be different. Can you supply info on that subject? I presume that your reference to 0.5 ohm is the resistance measured across the positive and negative input connectors. I have measured my new Standard DF-478, and I get a 0.5 ohm reading, so I am happy to report that it is in the clear! After receiving the coil, I also see that the flat cable connectors are of the narrow type, so those who wish use the DF-478 or similar Ford coil, should order the Standard # S-539 connector as well, it will make attachment easier. I have also seen the same connector pictured in catalogs from other suppliers, Mallory seems to use it frequently on their products.

To all not familiar with the E-core coil male connector for the coil/dizzy cable, to my joy it turns out to be the same as those on my NGK spark plugs, so a spark plug cable will fit on the coil! Some years ago I bought a universal Accel spark plug wire set with 8 cables in it (US made). I still have unused wire with straight cap for the spark plug that now will attach to the coil, and extra connector with caps for fitting on the distributor end of the cable, so I didn't have to buy new ones!
