if you put a small gear on cam and not a smaller on crank....you have changed ratio .... as engine turns it will change cam timing...wont work
I just read this thread and was wondering when someone'd get around to mentioning the basics, that a tooth count of 2 to 1 is requisite. A 50 tooth cam sprocket'd need a 25 crank, and a 48'd need a 24.

You mention that you were gettin Cloyes chains; I ran into that same problem a few years ago buying Cloyes T chains for a 318. I went thru a couple of them; both too sloppy for my liking; so I returned the 2nd one to Useless Zone then went around the corner some place else, and bought an Edelbrock, double roller as the Cloyes units were.
The Edelbrock was a much better fit.
I'd used Cloyes parts before but like every other manufacturing company these days "they don't make em like they used to".

the particular Cloyes chains I had bought weren't the "performance" ones but rather a "factory heavyduty replacement" meaning it was meant for the cop cars and other "premium" smallblocks that originally came with a double roller.

Wow! I just saw this in my searching! Has anyone else seen this different tooth count set? Doesn't look like the poster ever followed up.

Having problems with a set in my truck. Although I am not at all sure I want an odd ball set installed for the future.

Getting close to putting my /6 back together. How much timing chain slack is “too much”?
