Thanks for the help with the transmission. Now onto the motor, it misfires BAD at idle causing it to shake and lope and it smokes, A LOT (white with gassy smell). I changed the intake/exhaust manifold gasket and torqued all the nuts down. I have the air/fuel mixture screw all the way tight and it still runs! Could this be a vacuum leak? Like my EGR valve?

Have you adjusted valve lash yet?

If your dragging a couple cylinders, the butterfly in the carb could be too far open, unmasking the transfer slot. The idle mixture screw becomes inconsequential. The transfer slots will flow more fuel than the idle circuit.

You can adjust the valves roughly cold, not running, back off the idle screw, set the mixture screw 1-1/4 turns out and see what happens.

There should be information about setting valve lash in the FAQ someplace.

Thanks for the advice, well I'm going to limp it across town to my high school auto shop because i don't have the tools to fix it here. Luckily 6 out of my 8 hours there are in shop.

Got 3-5 psi of vacuum from the carb and intake manifold. Then I was listening after shutting it down and I heard "plip" "plip" coming from the manifold, took off the egr valve and gas started coming out

EDIT: got it running better. My friends '89 chevy died so the Slant Six that he hated came to the rescue and after idling for a while it cleaned up like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IGU8nB4rRk

Ok, so I pulled off the carb and cleaned it and it is back on the car, pulled the valve cover and I'm going to adjust the valves, I noticed that one of the valves seemed stuck (intake) would this account for only 5psi of vacuum, poor idle, and wants to die with any throttle under load, and the needle twitched around when I was testing vacuum

Ok assuming that the valve isn't bent can I hit it with a hammer to free it up or could it be carbon deposits holding it open? I am going to turn the motor over tomorrow and see if it is stuck

I've freed a valve which had something locking it open by hitting the top of the rocker arm with a hammer. That engine had an intake valve so far open there was fuel in the air above the carburetor when that piston came up on the compression stroke.

Ok, so the number 4 cyllinder intake valve is barely open, turns o
ut my moms boyfriend has a compression tester this entire time and just hasn't told me, so tomorrow I have to fix my friends chevy truck and then maybe run a compression test on the motor, if it all checks out good any suggestions why it has such low vacuum? Put a new carb to manifold gasket in and new intake/exhaust to head gasket in so I don't know where it could have been leaking from except for the valve cover

I suggest putting some oil on the valve stem before you tap it down, you don't want it to stick down in the guide.

Secondly I got the carb (Holley 1920) back on the car after a good cleaning.

I need new plugs, my current plugs are BOSH and they are black

I got the valves set cold (.011 Intake and .021 Exhaust) It got too dark or else I would have ran it and readjusted them hot.

I only set the valve cover on for the pictures, it isn't bolted down yet.
