Thanks for the uploading pics help. Gotta admit, Ron P, that Witch picture and comment are funny. lol Found an article about the RTS cars touring around in 70, including a Duster with some aero work. The grills flat as a board between the headlights and that curved front valence doesn't even cover the K-member. And the rear roof "unique spoiler" baffles me - separation there at the roof lessen lift on the trunk area?.... That rocker panel molding doesn't look like it has any ground effect to it either. And, then there's that neat looking rear belly pan. That thing is almost inspiring since my rear bumper is all dinged up and really not useable. I appreciate the effort in these designs but I think these cars are too much form-over-function.... That Roadrunner is pretty wacked out too; I'd take my "normal" looking one anyday over that.... Since my Demon isn't "340" car, I thought about coming up with a "225" design that mimics the cartoon writing. Or, if I follow through with some of these crazy aero ideas I might put "Aero" there instead of "225".. Latest crazy Aero Idea: Total grill blockoff and rear or trunk mounted radiator. Make a full front belly pan coving everything, k member included and cut a couple of vent holes for the engine bay & suspension stuff? I've come across some threads where it's been done successfully, mostly in trucks and imports. On the cars I've seen, most had louvres or scoops on the trunk top lid, vent cutouts between the tail lights (not happening for me!), and/or electric fan overkill. Some have water pump pressure problems and use a booster electric pump to help, don't know if I'm up to doing that - lots of talk about using 1" or so lines to the trunk radiator. And, closing off air to the engine bay worries me. Is exhaust manifold cracking really a worry as I've read about it? Would less airflow thru the engine bay affect other things? Using these huge aluminum underbody pans I have, I imagine if I used copper piping to the trunk and lay it on the aluminum I'd get decent heat transfer. To boot the idea, I'd get some weight transfer to the rear. Is this a totally out to lunch idea? Losing trunk area is no big deal for me, rocks & dirt flying up into radiator maybe.... Venting the system of air might be a pain. Any ideas? Go wing - I went to a car show this weekend. Paid $5 to get in (would've been $10 without my military discount!) and I saw a total of 3 mopars of 40 or so total cars.... Lousy! If I see another first Gen Camaro I'm goin postal! A '74 Dart sport had a Go wing on it and I've seen them before. But, this time, I really took a good look at it, aero wise. It looks functional with being able to adjust angle-of-attack mostly downward. This wing was positioned where I think it would go/look best (car didn't originally come with the wing and it was an aftermarket wing). Visibly, it doesn't look like it'd cause much drag but at only 3 or so inches tall about all it can do is play around in the laminar bubbles. Anybody seen tuft or tunnel testing on the back glass and at what point the air separates? |

A really good reference on practical aerodynamics is Kent Paser's Speed with Economy. It's about making airplanes faster, but drag is drag. Some really interesting ideas in there. I own the book and have read it cover to cover. He took his Mustang II, already a fast airplane, and added about 70 MPH to it with no power upgrades, just aero.
