Having participated in a similar fly & drive adventure back in ’74 with a 51 Mark VI Bentley involving most of the little states on the East Coast, Baltimore to Bangor, New Year’s weekend; don’t believe a word from seller’s mouth, and expect the unexpected. The good news on this trip was no one froze to death, and the car only had to be trailered the last 25 miles home. To quote Click & Clack the Tappet Brothers when asked the same fly & drive question about what to bring along for spare parts for a Dodge Dart said; two other Darts for parts cars. LOL Just bring a AAA membership card or equivalent, cell phone, and a good credit card, that stuff will pass TSA muster. That is my tool kit when driving the old stuff... come to think of it, the new stuff as well. Have fun Bill |

I dont know about California or Oregon.....but your Kentucky temp plate would get you nowhere in some juristictions. Just avoid IOWA all together. Absolutely make sure your liability insurance covers both drivers in any state. Consider comprehensive coverage for fire theft ....and at this time of year ....deer damage (hit one myself 2 weeks ago) Add driving glasses to the personal list. Add gas can with 5 gals of off road premium fuel. Oh,,,,,yeah.....FAT Mastercard and M+Ms |

Places to go between Stockton, CA and Kentucky. After you run the car up to Paradise and change the oil, check it over good and are confident in the car here's a plan from a guy who's done lots of driving all over the Big West. Head East on either Hwy 70 or Hwy 49 to Hwy 89, turn right and head south to Truckee, ca. Continue south on 89 into the Tahoe basin, turning left and driving around the lake clockwise to the east till you get to South Lake Tahoe, have lunch. then head east on 207, over and down to Hwy 395. Head north on 395 to Carson City and turn right onto US 50 east. If you are worried about breaking down out on lonely Hwy 50, there is plenty of daily traffic, so someone will stop to help if you need it. And its more interesting than I-80, which has only 1 or 3 more bigger towns to get food/help in. Take Hwy 50 to Great Basin National Park, check that out. Hike to the top of Wheeler Peak at ~13000'. Leave the GBNP area and continue east on 50 to I-15 in Utah. turn right and go south toward Cedar City Utah. A few miles south of Cedar City head east and south on the small back roads heading toward the upper section of Zion National Park, then continue south to intersect with Utah Hwy 9, where you turn left, east and go to Zion national park. Drive all the way into the park. Hike to Angles landing if you are adventurous. Leave Zion, and head east on Utah 9 again till you hit Hwy 89 (Utah), Turn right and head south east to Kanbe AZ. the north Rim of the Grand Canyon (GCNP)is to your south. To the east a bit is Navajo National Monument, where you can take a short easy morning or afternoon guided hike to see one of the cliff dwellings. From GCNP or NNM, head to Kayenta AZ and pick up Scenic US-163 and head north east through Monument Valley. The Four Points and Mesa Verde are east and a bit south of you. Take Colorado Hwy 160 east till you hit I-25, and that north to Denver. or head north from Monument Valley toward Moab and check out Cayonlands National Park (NP), Arches NP before hitting I-70. Then I-70 east to Denver. From Denver you could head north a bit to check out Fort Lairme Wyoming, the Oregon trail, Mount Rushmore, and the Blackhills of South Dakota, Devils Postpile (close encounters movie), the Badlands NP, the Corn Palace, and Wall Drug before heading east on I-90 to Sioux Falls and then La Crosse, Wisconsin (Old Style Brewing Co). Then Milwaukee (Sprecher Brewing Co), and Chicago, and then Indy and home. Or just head east from Denver on either I76 toward Omaha or I-70 to kansas City. Then its off to St Louis, and then Indy (check out the race track!), and then home. after you get your route figured out, post it, and people along the way, willing to give aid and or assistance can send you a phone number and an address. That has been done in other Car Forums with good results for cars being taken home across the USA. |

Quote: Are the tags current?
You don't need a tag in Kentucky, just a piece of cardboard in the back window with the words "Lost Tag" in black magic marker. ![]() CJ ![]() |

Last time I visited Doc, after a stimulating trip through the hills to the airport in the Dacuda, our plane was delayed on the ground for quite some time. When I got to Eugene, there was a sticker on the bag stating they had to open the bag to determine what was in it... A custom slant six intake manifold Doug had built! ![]() I've never heard of anybody having problems transiting other states with a temp tag from their home state. People take off with new rigs from the dealership and road trip all the time. Your insurance agent may be able to tell you more about other places. CJ |

Wow! ![]() ![]() I'm not sure we'll have enough time for all that though... I only have off through the 29th. We'll see how the car runs and feels and if all passes muster we will get a bit more adventurous. ![]() @ USAJon: Don't jinx us! ![]() ![]() ![]() I have a very good insurance company that I've been with for over 20 years. They're great! Title and Bill of Sale are in the mail to us so I can get everything squared away. Doc's place is just about an hour and a half in the wrong direction from Stockton and I'd really like to swing by the "Dutra Slant 6 Skunk Works"... |
