If you want, I can take a look at your car. I am in Silver Springs, on SR 40, east of Ocala. About 1 1/2 hrs from the I 75 - I 275 merge. Send a PM.

Hey guys, I just wanted to report back on this. I got all my vacuum hoses set up correctly and my mileage jumped up to 17.127 all in city driving over 158.1 miles. WOOT! So much better :P
Thanks you guys for all your help!

HEI ignition and 2 1/2" exhaust should get you over the 20 mark.

This is a great thread! I need to find someone to really tune my slant. I feel I am having some of the same issues. Anyone live by the S.F Bay Area who can really tune these engines?
If you're ever in my area let me know and I'll take a look at it. I'm no expert but I have a couple slants that run pretty well.

2½" pipe is a needless difficult hassle to attach to the slant-6 exhaust manifold. 2¼" is much easier and more than adequate.

HEI and exhaust are definitely my next steps with making this a more gas friendly daily driver. Instead of a larger single pipe I'm going for the dual exhaust set up via a dutra front and modified rear manifold. I had a family friend weld up the rear manifold for me already and I am waiting for my next pay check just to be sure my account will be ok after taking out the 250+shipping for the front manifold (So the 10th if all goes according to plan).

Here is my plan for the dual exhaust, I was hoping I could get opinions on it. My plan was to do 2" pipe all the way back with some sort of balance pipe (H or X pipe?) with two cherrybomb glasspacks (either the 26 7/16" or the 30 1/2", not sure yet). Everyone I've talk to locally says the less back pressure the better and that glasspacks are the way to go for a V8 sound with no back pressure.

Let me know what ya'll think, thanks for all the help and input. Without a doubt, if it weren't for this awesome community I wouldn't know my head from a hole in the ground around my slant (still think I hardly do but I'm getting better).

Im not sure about with duals. But with a single exhaust with no cat and a long glasspack mine sounded nothing like a v8. Ive done many things with my exhaust (probably too many things) and i have never come close to the sound of a v8. Just a sorta diesel sound below 2k when its straight pipe  Most people here will try to steer you away from full duals unless its a racecar. With a dd i think it might be a little overkill, id like to run side pipes when i get my dutras on but my engine wont be bone stock when i do so and i have a truck. Im not worried about weight, if i was, i wouldnt have 300lbs worth of tool box and tools in my bed. With a car and you trying to achieve as good of fuel economy as you can, try and keep it light. Run the duals to a "Y" then a good muffler, i cant remember where i read it, but i read one time that glasspacks arent the greatest for flow. If youd like a little more sound though, have it exit out the side in front of the rear tire, less tailpipe will be a tad louder. Just search for exhaust in the search function. There are lots of threads on it
