I'm thinking ignition/carb issue. That combo of engine trans should be lean burn and electric lockup, on the trans. Is the lean burn still present, and is it working correctly? If not present, what carb and distributer were used? Might also have EGR not working properly, if it is still on the engine. PS: This thread should actually be in the "Social Corner". |

Whew, well I am lost. I suppose I will try what Dan suggested. I am not sure what they did when they dropped this motor in. All the smog stuff was removed. The manifold and carb are both Edelbrock. All I know is that there is a cable coming up from the trans. I will do what I can, but I may just have to refer to a tranny shop. There is an old timer out here who specializes in the older cars, he can probably figure it out. Thanks for the info guys. |

Well I tried what Dan suggested this morning. The kickdown cable was very slack. I adjusted it so that it started moving just a hair after the throttle starts moving (earlier than that and I can not open the throttle fully). The problem is almost completely gone. I get a little shake if I accelerate hard while at cruising speed. But I am pretty sure a full tune-up will handle most of that. I can not believe such a small thing could cause such a big problem. Thanks to Dan, and everyone else for your input. |

Glad to help out. That remaining shake really ought to be diagnosed and fixed, because if it's still in the transmission it will eventually cause expensive repairs. How's the shifting now? Does it upshift from 1st to 2nd at about 15-18 miles per hour and from 2nd to 3rd at about 25-30 miles per hour at light throttle? Does it downshift if you kick the throttle floorward? |

I am not sure of the speed of the shifts. It seems to shift right in to second, but takes a little longer then normal for third. I hope it holds for a while. Luckily I do not drive much. I do not have the money for a trans rebuild right now. What is the latest model car I can pull a 904 trans from? Maybe I can find a decent one at the yard. |

Interesting. Luckily I have a shop not too far away that does a free transmission diagnostic! |
