Quote: OK Dan what would you call the ones without the snorkel?
I guess it depends on context. I might call them "1961-'69 stock slant-6 air cleaners", I might call them "1961-'69 except '62 170 stock slant-6 air cleaners", I might call them "annular-intake silenced air cleaners", I might call them "air cleaners without snorkels". Quote: Got a pic of the open element air cleaner?
Yes, but it's thousands of miles away in storage. Here's a not-very-clear one. There was a shield spot-welded to the base plate extending vertically and outward to guard about a 150° section of the air cleaner from road splash propelled rearward by the radiator fan. The rest of the element had no guard or cover.Quote: What problem did they cause?
None that I know of. The 1962 170 item was referred to as an unsilenced air cleaner, and yes, they are considerably noisier.

Thanks. If my monitor wasn't so dark That pic would be good. I read there was some problem caused like a "flat spot." I thought they were referring to the mushrooms. Annular sounds like a Holley thing. |

Ahhh! I know what you're thinking of. It's the other way round: if an air cleaner with a snorkel is installed wrong, it can cause a flat spot. See here. |
