Butyl vs. urethane to hold in windshield?

Glad you went with Butyl. It's the correct stuff for older vehicles. It wont dry and crack, causing water leaks like urethane will. It's better to put too much in, rather than not enough. You can always clean up the gunk that seeps out. It's a much bigger mess when you have to pull the windshield and go through the entire process again.

I had to spend a bit of time cleaning up the previous installers over-application of butyl. Hopefully this thing will never have to be taken out again. And, since I know we all love pictures, here are some:

I got the old busted windshield out by removing the lockstrip and carefully pressing out with my hand in a corner to start it. I pried the gasket back with my fingers while pressing and eventually the windshield popped out. It was a hot day and I parked the van with the windshield facing the sun to get the gasket as soft as possible.:
