You can tell by looking at harmonic balancer, if its one peice cast with 3 grooves its got the heavy crank, I believe these are fairly rare, think they may only be in 4wds
I just disassembled an original 1982 cast crank engine with the heavy 3 groove pulley...it was out of a short bed D-150 2wd, crank was same weight as my other cast cranks, nothing heavy about it... so it's not the balancer that totally tells the tale...I know the crank out of my 1972 HD3 John Deere 225 didn't have a shot peened crank when it should have, either...

xjarhead you will need a spacer to center flywheel
A pre-1967 flywheel would be the other way to go...

In general, slant six cranks got progressively lighter over the years. However, there isn't a way to tell how heavy the crank is without pulling the crank and weighing it. I am also not aware of any "heavy duty" high-strength truck crank other than the 225-2 package in the 60s in industrial motors. The only thing special about that crank was that it was shot peened.

Last year I bought a slant out of a 84 2wd had the light crank in it, just thought maybe the 4wd got the heavy crank, I know chrysler built a light version & heavy version in all there truck engines from the 60s-80s, I think they were 225-1,318-1,360-1,400-1,440-1 were light duty,225-3,318-3,400-3,440-3 were HD, don't no what all the differances are but the 225 HD engines in the later cast engines got a substantially heavy crank, heres a pic of it, click on it to make it bigger

By 84 the slant was using hydraulic lifters and a cast iron crank. The cranks by 84 were becoming the lightest ever used in the slant six, but not because they were used in 2wd trucks. The 225-2 heavy duty slant truck/industrial motor was dropped in the late 60s or early 70s. As I said above, the only thing special about the "heavy duty" 225 crank was that it was shot peened.

You may be thinking of the cast vs. forged crank. The pre-76 forged crank is generally heavier than the post 76 cast crank, but not always. The general trend is that slant cranks got progressively lighter as the years went by.

I thought the rods were shot peened? Not the crank.

Someone left out the mighty 413 motor home engines. They were around into the 70's. Then there was the 361.......poly 318.......and a few pickups got the 426 wedge.
