Still not firing, but I do see some spark. It's hard to see because it's bright out today. I'll double check it in the dark. The coil did check out on the secondary, I was reading my meter wrong like an idiot. I don't think it's getting a quality spark though. It's just not even trying to fire even once. Since I already have the pertronix bought, and it is hopefully working, I really don't want to buy yet another ECU, so I'm thinking I need to just do the HEI setup and be done with it, since it seems I need to buy parts anyhow. I can't really test the ECU so I have to assume I burnt it out.

Got a replacement blue ecu from oreilly's to have a known good test. I also realized I could sort of test this by watching for an on/off at the coil negative with a test light in series but I haven't done this yet. I got a HEI module on the way, but in the meantime I would like to hear her fire up.

Here's the plan for tomorrow.

Set distributor back in at proper tdc, and make sure it's actually pointing at #1 before the end the compression stroke and not too far towards the beginning to get in the ballpark. Verify that the reluctor tooth is pointing towards the pickup coil and the valves are closed.

Do #1 again, but use a coat hanger or something and verify that when all of the above happens the piston is actually compressing.

#2 replace the spark box
#3 check compression on all 6 cylinders, dry and wet
#4 Disconnect and check the needle and seat on the BBD, and reset the float level to spec.
#5 Set the idle circuit screws to some reasonable level.
#6 Double check the cold valve lash
#7 Crank the engine with the plugs out and ignition off to blow out any residual fuel.
#8 Try to start
#9 If failure, try a known good distributor.

Cylinder compression dry
1: 130, 2: 125, 3:125, 4:121, 5:130, 6:130
I didn't open the throttle or anything. I was more concerned about whether I had a hole in a piston or something so this is good enough to make me happy and I can continue troubleshooting.

Replaced the spark box with a replacement from the parts store, checked the timing against compression out of the plug hole and it all was where it should be. Put it back together, fired it up and it started right up. I stopped it and started it a couple times, and checked the timing. I thought it might be too advanced and so I had to adjust the dizzy bracket on that second bolt a bit to get a little less advance movement. I tried to start it again after that but nothing. I think it's just getting too much fuel and it's flooded at this point for some reason, so that's enough for tonight. I'll fool with it more when it's warm, but so far so good!

Fired it up again tonight and it idled for quite a while. Just needed to adjust the choke a bit and the timing until it was where it wanted to be to start. It seems to be at about 10 degrees BTDC. It's a little rich, and wants to backfire if I hit the throttle to quick, but that's about where I was before when I needed to tune the carb settings up. So, good, everything works for the most part. The BBD has a bit of a throttle shaft leak but I'm saving up for a holley 2300 to replace it with at some point. Until now, I am so much happier! Tuning and driving I like! It's such a relief to know again that I have a working car :)
