Quote: Do you guys recommend getting a cam and lifter kit? Seems I can never find one on craigslist and ebays ect. What about the carb? Is a 600 cfm pretty good to have for mild performance? Also what about rebuilding the engine first? Do you guys recommend that first?
I've actually found it's cheaper just to do it at once and it's all new...with a stock engine just bolting on the 4 barrel won't help much and putting a new cam in without a bump in compression is worthless...Considering the slant six E-body is just slightly heavier than the late A-body by a couple hundred pounds (an E-body with the driver would be similar to the 1975 Duster with a college football player in the passenger seat. If I just wanted a 'bump' in power and keep the mileage, Ted's build and a small 4 barrel would do the job.... If I wanted more I'd be targetting a 10:1 compression ratio and a 270 advertised duration cam (like the Erson cams), and a 3.XX rear ratio, and couple with an Eddy 500 and headers...(If the car was a floor shift car, I'd be very tempted to install a Truck A-833OD tranny and a set of 3.91's). The 600 is good for racing, but I have never gotten one to give better than 13 mpg highway with all the attention lavished on it for mileage and street...the 390 cfm Holley and 500 Edelbrock are better for that, with the Eddy giving good all around manners and easier to tune. -D.Idiot |

Where is this Teds build located? I looked for Ersons cams on the internet and could not find them anywhere. Is there an average price to have a Slant 6 rebuilt. Trying to get an idea of how much it would be to go this route. I wold rather go for the rebuild first but would want to rebuild so I can eventually put the 4 barrel on in the future. |

I just went thru my engine and cost was 1500 dollars that included what I am still assuming good/basic machine work ( nothing fancy ) and the lowest quality parts money can buy.

Quote: I have no technical input but wanted to say "Hats Off" to you guys for keeping the slant 6 in your E bodies. It is so tiresome seeing 440 or 340 powered eBodies built from perfectly fine slant cars. The worlds doesn't need another copy AAR 'Cuda….
I couldn't agree more, we don't need more v8 copies ...... if I wanted a v8, well, I'd still be waiting to get one seriously though, there are a lot of good reasons to keep it a slant. you all know one of the big reasons, it's a solid good performing, reliable motor. keeping the /6 avoids multiple upgrade costs (k-frame, tranny, rear-end, driveshaft + motor, cooling, wiring), so I can put that money into more important things like body repair/paint and a new interior (gawd awful pricing!!! eg: new interior door panels = @ $1200). as a daily driver it will get MUCH better gas mileage than a v8. and it's unique .... for 1970 they only made under 1600 225/6 3spd manual Barracudas (out of a production run of @ 49,000 total) and at this time, most of those have been scrapped or upgraded to v8s. how many folks have even heard of a factory slant powered e-body (most peeps I talk to are shocked they offered it at all). not many have seen one in person, so it will be cool and unique at any show. I need to find a builder in my area for mine, i'm not near confident enough to ensure a solid long term build (nor do I have the tools to ensure a good build) and as I said, she'll be a daily driver and reliability is huge to me. loving this site and all who contribute to it! thank you to all, your help and input is invaluable information to keep these babies going for a long time |
