I think for a 4x4 it's about torque, traction, and power to weight ratio...(almost like drag racing...except there you worry about top end...not all about launch)...
You're completely right. With the weight of REAL 4x4s (ie: not the "cityfied" junk you see nowadays), you need a good amount of torque to get the vehicle (and the extra accessories, which can add up to a full ton of extra weight depending on what you put on) moving up steep slopes and over rocks. I'm a firm believer in the "If you're not going too slow, you're going too fast" way of thinking when on a trail, and for constant low speeds, high gearbox/T-case ratios and lots of torque are what pay off.

And when you air down big tires, you need even more torque to get the buggers moving. Then there's those of us who are insane enough to plan on financing a set of Mattracks a year or two down the line

I've been MIA for a while and was curious how the adapter plates are coming...anything new as of yet?

New question: Where will these adapter plates locate the starter (high? Low?)

Feels SOOOOO good to be back in town.

Andy is working on them. They will be low starter, I believe.

Starter mounts in the 727 or 904 location, not the /6 location. So I guess that would be called the low mount location.

Biggest hang up that I've run into so far is that the 904 bellhousing is actually different than the 727 bellhousing. That was a surprise to me and it means that I actually need to produce two versions of this plate.

I see value in having a 727 plate since guys want to run that tranny and also, guys will want to use that bolt pattern in order to run a SB scattershield or manual 5 speed.

I need to do the 904 pattern in order to have a clean way to bolt on the 508 OD tranny.

Andy,

I assume the 727 and 904 you are looking at both bolt to the SB mopar? The bolt patterns must not be that different if they are both SB trannys. They also made B/RB versions of both of these trannys (yes, 904 too), in case you didn't know.

Also, my guinea pig is ready for dissection any time... :)

Right, I'm working with SB versions of both the 727 and the 904. The bolt locations are same where they bolt to the engine, but the starter location is shifted slightly on the 904 and it also doesn't have the same bolt locations at the bottom of the case.
