Has to be a valve body problem, or something in the trans causing a massive pressure leak. Not sure if this would cause the problem, but I would check the KD band servo. Make sure it is not cracked, rings are OK, anything that might cause a pressure leak. If I remember correctly when 3rd is applied, pressure is also routed to the KD servo release. Otherwise call transgo in the morning to see if they can help. As a last resort, to make the race, install any valve body available. Just make sure the years are compatable, if using a stock VB. If you need, give me a call, and I will try to help. |

I would probably change out the whole transmission before swapping just a valve body and then having it be the servo. Can I do a check on the servo externally. I don't want to change the transmission and then find out I should have tested something before pulling it. Be back at 1:00 ![]() ![]() |

Also, not sure, but could be an issue with the accumulator. Fluid leaking by. |

Thanks for the post Matv91. I removed my header extensions, and shifter cable and drained and dropped the pan. Looked closely at all the mounting points for the valve body and did not see any gaps by the naked eye. Tested them with a wrench before removing and they were all tight. Removed the valve body and sat it aside to drain. Hooked up the air and ran all the test in the ATSG manual. Both servos are operating and have minimal leakage. Both clutch packs thud when air is applied and again have minimal leakage. According to that it has to be a valve body problem. I did pull out my old parts from the change and I did install the correct"new" shift valve. Just thought I better double check. So I have the well worn old transmission laying on the floor beside the car. I can just pull that valve body and drop it in and see if it works. If so I'm good to go. If not I'm done for this race. Thanks for all the help. |

Put the valve body out of my old transmission that I had been running in the race car and put iot in the new transmission. Same result! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ***Please note the above valve body swap is not a good test. That is because of the plug you have to put in the case with the TG-3 kit. It blocks the governor return pressure port and the old VB could not operate with that plug in there. So I'm done trying to thrash for this weekend. I will race the truck and call it a day. I may just pull the transmission and give Charles Brooks a call and take to him to look at if i don't see something obvious. |

Well, the best thing to do is not give up and learn from the "hard" things we have to do. Finally figured out why I was missing 2nd and 3rd gear. I did finally give Transgo a call. They had me remove the valve body for the 3rd time and run some more air tests out on the bench. I spoke to an old timer named Larry (88 years old and still working every day!) and he was very very helpful. We spoke 3 different evenings and tested different things in and out of the car. Finally he said let's just disassemble the whole valve body and walk through it piece by piece. After doing so he said you have done everything right! That made me feel a little better. The only thing he could find was that we could not move the 1-2 shift valve using air like he wanted to see. It is a tricky passage to get air into but it just didn't move like he wanted. So after hours of working with me another Tech named Mark said to pull the plate off of the side where the 1-2 governor plug is and put a washer behind that plug and bolt it back together. Shazammm!! The plug moves easily with my shop air. So what happened? If you look the picture the plug on the right has a small nub in the center that holds it away from the cover plate. This is supposed to allow enough space for the fluid to get behind it and shove it over and shift into 2nd gear. For some unknown reason that nub was just a little to short and by simply putting a .04 cent washer behind it, it moved it enough to allow it to do its job! It had no 3rd because the 1-2 shift valve was not moving and that affects the 2-3 shift! I made myself some notes and will always test out on the bench before assembling another one! ![]() ![]() Transgo gets very high marks for customer service! Larry actually offered to give me his phone number so I could call him later after they closed!! That doesn't happen too much anymore. Attachment: IMG_6268.JPG [ 51.05 KiB | Viewed 7298 times ]

Great news. It is good to know that the problem was not something that you induced, but something completely out of your control. Now you can get back to racin'. Whoo-hoo! |

Good job Rick! ![]() This is why I have someone else do my trans work. I do not have that much patience. ![]() |

Quote: something completely out of your control What was really odd was that it worked fine in the truck for 3 years. It just has to be the pressure and spring differences I guess. I'll be glad to put it on the ground and take it for a spin!! ![]() ![]() |
