Quote: I am now getting steady 14.69-14.79 voltage
Too high unless the engine bay (specifically, the voltage regulator) is at subfreezing temperature and the battery is severely discharged. Find the high resistance upstream of your voltage regulator.

So with the “fields loads relay” installed basically everything is separate from the rest of the vehicle. Shouldn’t be but a few wires to diagnose right? Two field wires, relay wires, battery wire and a couple grounds. That’s it according to the HEI writeup. How would anything else matter?? |

Maybe just MAYBE I found something. The green field wire has a crack in the insulation. Swapped the two field wires and taped up the crack for now just to see. As I said this is a intermittent problem that comes and goes. I thought I had checked all the wires and I did with a voltmeter but didn’t physically check them. |

My short was at the alternator. I don’t have a ammeter as it’s been bypassed and the charging system is basically on its own little circuit. That thread was actually one I have read.

I hope this is the fix I’ve been looking for. Somehow, in all my haste I guess, there’s only one relay and there should be 2! One for the HEI and one for the alt VR circuit. I guess there has been a high voltage feedback loop to the VR causing my issues. I really hope that’s it as I’m ready to call it quits and just walk! Did I mention that this is my only vehicle and I’m in heart failure? Yeah seems my luck just gets worse and worse huh. So now I’m stuck till I get something to freaking work right. ![]() |

So I believe this was issue to start with when I did the HEI upgrade. Somehow I guess my brain is off it’s axis. Somehow half the relay was on the HEI and the other half on the VR. Now it has two and I’ve checked with ohm meter to make sure it’s running on the right wires this time. Thanks for everyone’s help and tolerance of my dumb brain! I do appreciate you all taking time and that’s how I found the issue was to go through the whole thread again and re-read/retry everything. Hopefully this solves more issues than just the VR. |
