The egr was removed before I got it, also the car now runs on 2 and 1/2 turns out on each side with the Holley 350 any less any I’ll die trying to accelerate usually fine idling. more turns out it will sputter at certain speeds and I assume is should need more turns out because it’s already rich. When I first got the car some push rods were bent, every thing is moving freely now but could my cam be wiped it has 120000 miles? |

I don't think your idle circuit should be affecting your cruising issue or your acceleration issues. |

Quote: The egr system and flapper, not sure if that year had a flapper, was removed and the holes were welded solid. The "flapper" (manifold heat control valve) has nothing to do with the EGR, and should not have been disabled/hacked. That alone can cause a good list of driveability/economy problems.

If You haven't fine-tuned the float level, do it before dorking around with anything else, a low/wrong float/fuel level will do exactly what You're describing. Thoroughly check for vacuum leaks. If that checks out, a wiped exhaust lobe will exhibit hesitation to backfiring into the intake, the more the load....the worse the symptom. Poor valve seat sealing can cause the above, plus leaning out one or multiple cyls. The carb can also just be the wrong calibration Good luck & keep updates comin'. Jim K6 |

I did a little more messing around with it using a vacuum gauge. Long story short I switched the Holley accelerator pump cam from the factory #2 position to the #1 position and it helped the off idle stumble a lot. Silly how little a change made such a big difference. I was setting the idle screws for best vacuum, but it seemed to die more accelorating. I took it half a turn out and it transitions better accelerating. I think if I get a more aggressive pump cam, I might be able to run a bit leaner at idle and overall. |

Thanks for your guys help troubleshooting It could’ve been a lot longer without it. Probably the last update but thanks cause at the beginning I was worried I didn’t have a useable engine but the forum and you guys helped me work out the problem instead. I switched to the Holley green cam and it now shreds a tire. I mean it did just rain but still. I also was able to turn in the idle screws to a more reasonable amount. Thanks guys. |
