I do know the A500 and A518 share the same Borg Warner overdrive unit
Mmm…no, sir. There is no Borg-Warner overdrive in either of those transmissions. They were in-house designed, in-house built by Chrysler.

D'OH! Dan strikes again. I hadn't looked closely at these transmissions for over a year, so I got it wrong. I just looked closer and it is not Borg Warner, but NEW PROCESS. I knew it was one of those gear companies. Whoops.

New Process was Chrysler's gear operation for quite a long time. In '90 there was a GM tie-in and a rename to New Venture. In '12, the whole outfit closed down. Good history in the Wiki:

I think you are thinking of the "old" Borg Warner OD units, that were used by many car manufactures back in the '50's, and '60's. They mounted onto the rear of a 3 speed standard shift trans with an adapter plate. Chevy, Ford, and Chrysler (probably others) all used them and they were almost identical to each other.
I had several cars with them. Really liked them. I had one car that I put together for towing one of my race cars. 1962 Chevy Convert, 348 engine, with the 3 speed stick on the floor, and the BW overdrive. Had a electric switch on the shifter, to manually control the OD. I could do "split shifts". 1st, 2nd, 2nd od, 3rd, 3rd od. Just like a truck with a 2 speed rear.

Reed, I would Just Call A& A trans in Camby IN, and see if you can speak to Rick Allison there. He can guide you through and answer your questions.
