:D FACT IS SHIVA, YOU LIVE IN THE GOOD OLD US of A and if you want to do it, by all means DO IT!

When you say rear engine, im compelled to ask if the eng/trans is in front of, or in back of the rear axle, thereby redifining rear or mid engine drive. either way, if you go true rear engine, dont forget to tube frame the whole deal and flip your rear end. that tube frame by the way has to be channeled through the unibody for weight transfer purposes.

however, if the eng/trans remains in front of the rear axle ,all. the above applies except flipping the rear end. ballast is an idea, but geometry changes are far safer.

many years ago, we mid-engined a chevy nova wagon, made it look like a sedan delivery, tubed it, tricked a small block, used a 3/4 truck rear end and ruined the brain of many a mustang owner.

remember, you are only limited by your imagination.

Local P-N-P has afront drive '69 Eldo with 472 power. I've seen that setup used in a '54 Chevy pickup with the motor inside the bed, actually borrowed from a GMC motorhome with a 455.

Corvair is OK. The early swing axles are similar to the '50s Mercedes Gullwing classics. Nobody said those were unsafe, same basic design as the early Corvair.

In the early 70's, I had a 65 Corvair convert. It had a 327 V-8 in the back seat. A few suspension mods, to go along with the weight and distribution change. It would go around a corner, like it was on railroad tracks. Never drove a 1st gen Corvair, but relize they did have "some" issues. But saw no problem, with stock 2nd gen Corvairs. Back then I believed Ralph Nader was an self serving ahole, and still do, to this day.

Nader had his head up someones exhaust pipe. If He had even a clue about what engenering ment and any sort of concience he would have gone after the Mustang with its rear bumper bolted to an intrigal body and gas tank. Tell me Ralfy how many people have burned alive in that oversight after a rear end collision? and as a former owner of a 67 2+2 fast back with a 289 they were very loose, and front heavy car. I'd take a Porshe or a Corvair anyday. Bottom line: don't belive every thing you read

here is something different and is probably the easiest way..again you need part from a defunct GM car....weigh dist should be good and everything is compact....tried a Pontiac Fiero mid engine transaxle, I am not that familar with it, but here in Illinois there is an aftermarket tuner for Fieros that put the latest Vette engine in fieros and they perform like a Cobra and have the driving comfort...From what I have seen, the engine and transaxle drop out of the car as a unit and the engine sits sideways or Tranverse instead of inline, compact....just my 2 cents....Jerry

Now...HERE'S what I'd call a "rear-engine" Dart:

Note that engine also occupies "middle" and "front".

I'd guess it was a little "hard to handle" as well...
Doubt it would pass muster with Ralph N.

Living in the land of rednecks you see a few things. The local sport here is mudbogging. We have a Mid engine 4wd 60 nash Metropolitan. Won A class at the local bogs last year.
Drop your slant and 904 in the back seat. Luckily the 904 drives a NP208
transfer case that is hooked via a short shaft to a Dana 44 front diff installed where the Dart rear belongs. Use the front drive output shaft. The rear output of the tranfer case is not used. The Dana 44 has its steering capacity removed or use a RWD Dana 44 with the front drive gears.
You get an underdrive for burnouts and wheelies (2 speed tranfer case),,,,,and a power takeoff off the back of the transfer case so you can run a hay bailer (rear output shaft). If it doesn t need to pass DOT it could be done in a week. If it needs to be pretty expect longer.

If it doesn t need to be a slant then the 500CID Caddy Eldo FWD setup is the way.
