I had a Nippondingbat mini starter on my '69 440 for several years. Worked great, started fast, never a problem. But then I'd go to car shows and at the end of the day, I'd hear all the other old Mopars fire up sounding like... well... old Mopars. And mine sounded like a 95 Ram truck :-/

So I pulled out the original starter from my '66 Polara (which I had rebuilt at a local starter/alternator shop) and put it on the 440. I love that old thing!

Now I have a dilemma- do I leave it there, or do I put it back on the Polara when its new engine goes together? I think I'll probably use a late-model large Chrysler starter on the '69, and put the '66 starter right back where it was from the fall of 1965 until just a few years ago. It only seems fair...

I have the original starter from the '69 around somewhere, too. I really should get it rebuilt for the 440.

I have a brand new, not rebuilt, 1.8hp large-frame Chrysler starter in a Chrysler box. Last time I was browsing through that shelf, I heard it going "Sell me to Steve! Sell me to Steve!".

I kind of like the fact that my slant sounds exactly like my 2000 Ram truck when I hit the key. cough cough VROOOOOOM!

I still have the factory original starter from my truck around somewher in the garage--but it was in serious danger of dying from header heat, and the 'wind down' after the engine caught really annoyed me. So it made way for the mini-starter.

None of my Chrysler starters has the extended wind-down. That happens when the brake washer wears out (or somebody lubricates it out of ignorance)

Mini-starters aren't immune to wind-down wierdness either. The one on my daily driver (73 318 Satellite) has some really annoying wind-down noises. I think its slightly sick in general and I'll probably put the one I just removed from the R/T on in place of it.
