Sure is.. I try not to scratch the paint on ruster. But it's too rusty to tell what's going in with the paint. Enjoy your new lightness! |

By my calculation I should lose roughly 40-42# with the changes I made. Fiberglass deck lid, aluminum hinges and getting rid of the gas struts and bracket that operated the steel trunk lid. Also pulled the drivers side glass and winder and installing some Lexan. Sneaking up on 12.70!

Trunk lid is all done. It came out great I think. Painter said it wasn't perfect but he's a perfectionist! I brought home, installed the alignment pins in the holes and bolted it fast. If the car lost 45# and I loose 20# we will be faster!! Right now I got to go eat my ice cream. I will start losing my 20# tomorrow!

Aluminum prop rod? My aren't we fancy? Mine has a warped wooden dowel pin that had been with the car since Mike bought it. I got very specific orders to not lose it.  Very nice work as always Rick.

Pulled out the drivers side window, winder and door panel. Installed new Lexan. I think I lost about 50# total with those mods and the trunk lid. I guess I'm ready for Clay City. Rick |

I went racing at Mason Dixon to try and get a few runs in since I haven't been out since Wilkesboro! Wanted to make a couple runs in the new lighter configuration and see what it would do. Got there late and unloaded and went through tech and to the back of the Super Pro line ( Pro had already ran their time run) Took off and the car sounded fine and ran well. They forgot to tell me that everything was 1/8 mile and I went through the 1/4 mile! Car ran a 8.15 and that isn't far off it's best ever 8.07 or 8.09. This was in near 90 degree temps with 2300' air. Came back to the pits and popped the hood and found my fan belt had flipped over in the pulleys and was basically inside out. Frustrated , I pulled it off and turned it back over, and then made it extra tight. Fired it up just as they were calling our class back up for time run #2. I stood over the engine and revved it up gradually and at about 3500-4000 rpm the belt began to "flutter" and shazaam! It flipped right over again just like it was supposed to do it. So I packed up and came home, not wanting to have a belt come off and pop my external oil pump belt off in the process. As it turns out I have found that many people are having similar problems. Obviously I checked all the pulleys for any being bent and they are all lined up nicely. But a common factor that most everyone had was the standard "toothed" belts that are about all you can buy anymore. The inner toothed belt is to make the belt more pliable when going around small pulleys, they say. But I wondered if the toothed belts took away some of the needed rigidity that the belt needs not to fly off a pulley and 6500 rpm. I didn't know. But since I work in a mower shop I went to the wall and picked out an premium belt for one of our mowers that was about 1" longer than my current belt. The belt had a full wrapped outer core ( Kevlar I think) and no teeth. I removed my inside out belt and installed the new one. And there you have it! Shazaam! Silky smooth operation with no fluttering at all. I jacked the car up and put the rear on stands so I could run up through the gears and apply a little load to the engine with the brakes. Ran it up to @ 6000 rpm and shifted a couple times and the belt has stayed in place. The only thing that worried me was that it is a true 1/2" belt and the originals are 15 /32". It rides ever so slightly higher in the pulleys , but I think it will be Ok. Time will tell at London! |
