I think I'll rig up something to CC the combustion chambers on the various heads I have laying around so I can compare them.

The 48 cc figure is one from Howard's notes, but I haven't confirmed it. (I cc'd each chamber on the Davis head and came up with 51 cc's... :? )

Don't know about the Bruner head. (That one's on the bench and cleaned up now. It's next to be cc'd)

I have flow data, but can't seem to find the chamber volume figure for the Foster head. (I'll cc that one too...)

Post subject:  That Davis head flow data (NOT the new Billet one)

I thought I had posted this a long time ago. I looked and saw where I promised it...., but that was it...

Here are the goods on the head I got from Howard Davis. This is the head he was running before he made his billet head:

Valve sizes are: Exhaust - 1.45 and Intake - 1.70
Chamber volume=50cc

Lift....Intake@28"....Exhaust@28"......Ratio..E/I
200.....116.60.............95.00...............81%
300.....158.12............133.56..............84%
400.....177.00............158.12..............89%
450.....185.26............159.30..............86%
500.....188.80............159.30..............84%
550.....189.98............159.30..............84%
AVG:...169.29............144.10..............85%

Compared to the Norm Foster head flowed on the same bench:

Valve sizes are: Exhaust - 1.55 and Intake - 1.83
Chamber volume=45cc

Lift....Intake@28"....Exhaust@28"......Ratio..E/I
200.......89...................70................78.6%
300......137.................107................78.1%
400......174.................122................70.1%
450......187.................126................67.4%
500......195.................129................66.1%
530......198.................131................66.2%
550......195.................131................67.2%
600......184.................132................71.7%
AVG:...169.87.............118.50............69.7%

And the Gary Bruner head flowed on a different bench at 25"
(Seymour's Notes)

Valve sizes are: Exhaust - 1.45 and Intake - 1.78
Chamber volume=47cc

Lift....Intake@25"....Exhaust@25"......Ratio..E/I
200.....102....................93.................91%
300.....150...................141................94%
400.....183...................160................87%
500.....192...................169................88%
600.....201...................177................88%
700.....205...................181................88%
AVG:...153.50..............172.16............89%

And the milder Gerald Wright head on GodsRods Duster II (Also flowed by Gerald on the same bench as the Davis and Foster heads):

Valve sizes are: Exhaust - 1.31 and Intake - 1.61
Chamber volume=53cc(?)

Lift....Intake@28"....Exhaust@28"......Ratio..E/I
200.....103....................85.................83%
300.....143...................102................72%
400.....160...................110................69%
500.....168...................118................70%
600.....168...................118................70%
700.....168...................118................70%
AVG:...151.66..............108.50............71.5%

And last, but not least (well, actually it is the least  ) is the same head as above before Gerald cleaned up the ports a little bit.

Valve sizes are: Exhaust - 1.31 and Intake - 1.61
(I think he flowed it after the valve size increase, but these numbers may be completely stock, can't remember now)

Lift....Intake@28"....Exhaust@28"......Ratio..E/I
200......90.....................87.................90%
300.....129...................104................81%
400.....141...................110................78%
500.....148...................113................77%
600.....148...................113................77%
700.....148...................113................77%
AVG:...134...................106.66...........79.6%

There! Now I've got all this stuff recorded in one place finally. Thanks Chuck for providing this Forum! :D

Now to dig through stuff and find the rest of the engine specs for each engine...

You haven't made it yet, I s'pose...

Wasn't this the specs for the aluminum billet head, or are these something else. My bad if their not.

No, these are just the different factory ported heads I have. The "Howard Davis" head listed is the head he was running before he made the billet head. I edited the post above to make that more clear. Thanks for catching that.

I just talked to Howard yesterday in fact. He called to see how the Clay City race went. I'll update the billet head thread shortly. Not much to update, but it kicks it back up to the top.

Have you been making any "Slanted" progress on your Valiant?

I saw that after I re-read it more closely. I just saw you mention Howard's name, and its usually in the past been about the billet head...just got in a hurry and asked before I read it completely.

Making some progress, gathering parts most of this year, and fixing to put billet caps on a block, got the caps this week. I have just about everything to start a shortblock. This summer was just way too busy, i'm ready for it to slow down so I can get back to some car projects.

I played around ccing heads again...

After talking to Howard the other day I decided to re-check the head I got from him. He runs long reach plugs and no washers. I just threw in a set of regular plugs with the washers still on them. That probably accounts for the difference between his 48cc and my 51cc.

I re-checked it without the washers and it brought it down to 50cc.

The Norm Foster head has been milled quite a bit more with 45cc chambers.

The Gary Bruner head was in the middle with 47cc chambers with most valves allowing some seepage into the ports.

I also cc'd another head that was reportedly milled about .050 with a fresh valve job (stock valves) and those chambers were all 53cc.

Just posting something to be posting something...

I was "that close" to selling the new race engine... Which would have likely led to selling the Challenger at a loss... But a good heart to heart with Angie convinced me to hold on to it for now.

You can never replace things as easily or cheaply as you would hope, so we'll see what happens in 3+ years.

I will try to get the engine buttoned back up with the Howard Davis head on it and get it installed in the Challenger before I leave in June. Not sure that will happen with everything else that needs to get done, but that's the hope.

I bolted the head and oil pan on the engine the other day, just so that I can put it in the Challenger for storage. I don't plan to do anything with it other than get it under the hood and loosely bolted to the tranny.

Let's see... Two weekends ago Mike and I got the engine bolted into the Challenger...

Then today Mike, CJ and I got the Challenger slid all the way to within about 2 inches of one wall and back up on jack stands.

The current plan is to squeeze the Challenger, Dart and Duster III (Dennis' Duster) into the garage with a big crow bar and tube of wheel bearing grease...

I'll post some pics once the madness has come to full fruition.
(That last couple words means, "When it's all done" Cookie. :P )

Thanks for resisting Lou...

I saw that Jason is looking for LeMons drivers this year... I'm always a day late and a dollar short. :(

I'll have to make it a point to go play at Hockenheim and Nurburg Rings this time over... :D
