I am building my Webers now.
I am going to run the 40's based on the Weber tuning book.
They have a chart of cu vs rpm and recommended 'Chokes"

Did you by any chance record your jet numbers and emulsion tube numbers?
I have Seymour's notes but wanted to check if they are close to what you are running.

Right now I have F16 Emulsion Tubes. Might try F2, what Seymour had.
Although Weber book only lists F4-F15 on the chart, no F2.
The F16 is a new style with upward facing holes.
190 Air correction jets.
140 Main Jets.
60FS Starter Jets.
40FS idle Jets.

Are these close to yours?

Stan I will look and get back to you. Just loading the car and getting ready to head to Mason Dixon for the "Rocking Chair" nationals in the morning.

I was running 36 chokes when I went 12.80's. I have yet to get the tuning done with the 40's. I think my jets were 145 fuel jet , 190 air jet and a 55F6 idle/low speed jet.

With the 40's I definitely went up a size or 2 on the main fuel jet. And I just put in a 60 in the idle/ low speed jet. I will look and get back to you for sure. And I'll let you know how it runs tomorrow. But it is going to be 90 degrees and humid so the times may not be great!

I never did post back here about how the car ran. It only went 13.20's and it still has a little "flutter" in the transition from the idle/low speed to the WOT. Not horrible but definitely noticable.

While I have license and insurance on the car, running with open headers through the neighborhood isn't really nice, even out in the country. Since We have great neighbors, I took the car over to my friend "Speedy" and had him install exhaust on the car. Dual 2 1/2" off the headers to a nice tapered Y pipe, then single 2 1/2" into a AAR Cuda style muffler. In and out on the same end and then exiting in front of the drivers side tire. It is made so that the whole system can be taken off in about 2 minutes without unclamping anything. This made it much nicer to drive and also helped me to get much better O2 sensor readings at low RPM. Before I only got good readings at WOT from about 1/2 way down the strip on.

So after the last outing I order a bunch of jets and this past week I started changing things. I ran the car again this evening and made 3 more tweaks to the infinitely adjustable Webers and I think I have it pretty close to where it needs to be. The low speed circuit is a touch lean for a second , but quickly hits the main jets and the mid to WOT rpms is just about 12.8-13.0. The flutter was gone and it felt good. Not sure it is any faster but it feels good.

In case any Weber fans want to know. Main fuel jets-160, Air jets-195, Idle/low speed jets 60.

I'll post back after another trip to the drag strip!

Here is the exhaust look. :D I'll let you know how it runs after my trip to Mason Dixon tonight.

I also got the new Synchrometer that works well for tuning the carbs. With the location of the Master cylinder you can't get straight onto the trumpet. So they sell a hose to slip into the trumpet and the Synchrometer. Me being a tight wad, I looked at my spare lower radiator hose and it was an exact fit for the job! :D So it serves two purposes! Plus it was 1/3 the price and in stock! :D

Looking good!

Do you need to tune each barrel / throat individually or just 1/3/5 and then replicate the settings on 2/4/6?

Only need to get a reading on one barrel on each carb to get them synched.

Soooooooo, how did it run?

Car ran 13.26 @98 in 90degree temps. I was expecting to be close to twelves with the 40MM carb venturis. I will post more later, but my A/F seems to be way off and as soon as I adjust to get where I want to be it begins that flutter thing and not run smooth at WOT. I will post more later.

Runs with exhaust system in place were @ 13.40, so that was .15 slower, but not too bad.

Getting there! Nice work, Rick. With temp and tuning, I feel you will definitely hit the 12s with that setup.

Better conditions and it would have been 12's. Racing when it's hot sucks.

Yes it does! But Saturday was nice because there was a little less cars there and it was only T&T. You could have made 10 runs if you wanted to. I made 6 runs in 3 hours. :D :D

Below are the details of my runs. But just as a reference. I have made no changes to the car except for the larger 40MM venturis in the the carburetors and added an exhaust system. Same plugs, Same timing, Same fuel pressure (3.25#), Same ignition,gearing,tires...etc. Weather was 89 at the beginning of the evening and about 80 when I loaded up.

Previous best was 12.80 @103 at Londan,Ky in some really cool air. I was expecting to run close or into the 12's with the new venturis. And I could accept a little slower times I'm seeing, but the A/F readings and the fluttering is very puzzling to me. One thing I always could say about this engine with the Webers is that it was always silky smooth the whole way through the RPM range.

Run 1 off the trailer----------------13.40 @ 98.79------A/F--- over 14.0
Run 2--No changes-----------------13.49 @ 97.23------A/F--- 14.8 --(kept a closer eye on it this time)
Run 3--smaller air jet -------------13.41 @ 97.40------A/F----14.4---Came down a little
Run 4--Remove exhaust-----------13.26 @ 98.27------A/F----14.4-- Stayed the same.
Run 5--Larger fuel jet & air jet----13.34 @ 97.87------A/F----13.7---Came down, but flutters at higher rpm's
Run 6--Return to Run #4 settings--8.36 @ 80.62------A/F----14.0---1/8 mile race but all readings mirrored the run 4 1/8 mile stats.

All 3 runs with muffler on were within a tenth. As were the 3 without the exhaust. My 60' times are also off by @ .1 compared to the what I would normally see. (1.69-1.72)

What is confusing is the closer the A/F ratio moved towards my goal of 12.5-13.0 the more noticable the flutter was. At this point I am ready to pull the 40MM venturis and drop my 36's back in and see if everything goes back to "normal". I don't want to throw the towel in too early, but I am not sure what else to check right now.

Post subject:  Re: Covalt - "Project 65 Valiant"

So after trying since April to get my 40mm venturis to work in my race car I decided to give up on the idea and return to my 36mm's. At least it was running 12's and running smooth. So Saturday I began the removal of the carbs and much to my surprise, when I took off the air horns and looked inside I found my problem right away! Even though I took my time and was extra, doubly, super careful I installed the auxilliary venturi in backwards on #2 cylinder! On Webbers the primary venturi is just the main throat closest to the head. Directly behind it is the auxilliary venturi which actually has the passage for the main fuel nozzle in it. Basically fuel could not get out of the fuel nozzle on number 2 cylinder. It was most apparent at high rpms which makes sense. So after almost pulling my hair out I found my problem! :D :D

So instead of removing the 40mm's I decided to remove all three carbs , check things out and retry them. Everything else was in correctly, Thankfully. But, while they were apart I did some close inspections and found a couple things I changed.

#1- All three carbs were not opening the throttle blades fully. They were probably opening about 95% but it was obvious looking through the carb that they were not 100%. I took good measurements and then ground the throttle shaft stop/tab to allow the carb to open fully.I did all 3 exactly the same and called it a good.

#2- When looking in through the air horn I could see an obvious lip from the auxillairy venturi sticking out into the air stream. It was about 1/2 way around the air horn and probably stuck out into the air stream .030 or so. So I pulled all 6 out and took my dremel to them and tapered that lip down so there was a nice smooth transition past that area.

So then I reassembled everything. Ran the setup and synchronizing procedures and warmed the car up. Wow, it even sounds better just cracking the throttle. I took the car down the road and made 2 full throttle blasts! Woo Hoo!!!! :D Boy that felt good! Silky smooth and just how I thought it should be. But I knew my air/fuel would be way off and it was very rich at about 11.0 AFR. I made 3 adjustments and and it responded exactly as I thought it should each time. Arriving at just about 12.5 AFR I called it a day. :D :D

Now that it is running great I will put in my 4.86 gears and make a run at Gary Bruner's 1/8 mile record. It is 7.87 and I have gone 8.06 with my 4.30's. We shall see.

Final settings on the carb for anyone who cares (Stan) 160 fuel jet, 200 Air jet, 60 idle/low jet.

Thanks for listening! See ya all at Motor Mile! :D :D
