It attaches using the same 3 bolts that the factory cam retainer would have used(on the LA Engine). The slant 6 has none of those attachment points and I also think that there is not really room for one under A slant timing cover.

To make use of it a custom cover would need to be fabbed or machined in my opinion.

Well the new timing chains / gear set came in today from Autozone. I first installed the new chain, which is clearly marked made in the USA, and it definitely has less slack. Good! Next I installed the new cam gear and it was slightly better yet! So I guess I'll pull the crank gear off and add that yet and call it good. :D I can definitely live with the amount of play it has now.

I have the material in hand to made a chain guide and I may try to fab one up while I have this apart. It depends on how much of a hurry I get in!! :D

Took a couple hours of cutting, sanding, fitting.... repeat several times. But I got a decent fitting chain guide/guard installed in my timing cover. I have it so timing cover drops into place. No real tension on the chain. My assumption is that as the chain stretches, this guide will keep all the slack in the right place and not allow the chain to flop all over the place. I put some silicone between the guide and the timing cover to stop any leaks. Countersunk bolts and Ny-locks hold it in place. Here are some picks. Time will tell if it works.

I never liked the idea of a steel chain rubbing on any kind of plastic.......

Pretty cool solution, Rick. I hope it works well for you.

Looks good! Now I'm thinking about something of similar shape that's hinged on one end and has an adjusting screw on the other.

Like Dad truck, I like seeing what you went thru on your truck, I went back and read the whole 17 pages. I'm slowly working on my own 85, biggest difference is mine is a long bed. Looking at the wreck pix it certainly don't look like a bad enough wreck to have tweaked the frame.
On the timing chain situation I'm hoping that I don't run into those issues, as I assemble mine.
I found a Mopar performance double roller cam sprocket on feebay for $30-some. I have an old BB timing set here (I was told "low mile" ) factory big block single cam bolt version. Old enough to have the "DPCD" logo cast in.
Originally I was gonna use my new slant 6 cam sprocket with the old factory crank sprocket and chain.
But I found a new /6 double roller crank sprocket and melling "Hi Perf" timing chain from rock Auto to go with the cam sprocket so now I have all 3 pieces new.
Not sure if I am happy with the chain, box is marked "made in India". At least it ain't china I guess.
I'm wondering if maybe the stamp lost ink on the end of the stamper and it's really made in IndiaNA?

Two of the last double rollers I installed were the ones that were stamped 1 tooth off. So don't just line up the marks! :D

A tooth off on which end, cam or crank?

Cam gear.

I got the new cam in and degreed. This is the first cam in a long time that I did not have to move. The intake center line was marked at 106 degrees. Just lining up the dots got me at 103, 3 degrees advanced. So I buttoned it down right there.

I also removed one of the main bolts and installed one bolt out of my windage tray kits in its place. Then I made a 1" wide strap / brace to my pick up tube. Now it is ready for the pan and final install.

Engine went into the truck and we got it running over the last couple days.

14 tooth oil pump info here:
https://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopi ... 8&start=75

Truck seems to run pretty well with the new engine. I did not run the rpm up past about 4500 since I first want to put eyes on the new Dutra gear we are testing. It has been run for about 1hr. 40 min. total so far. Engine feels quite a bit stronger and I also still have my 3.23 gears in it. I will likely install the 3.55's with the sure grip back in as soon as I am sure the oil pump gear is ok for the long haul testing.

I do have a little "whine" up front that I suppose is from the timing chain guide I put in the timing cover. Not terribly loud but noticable. Like a tiny little "gear drive" whine! :D :D May calm down after running a little

The following is from over in the 14T oil pump thread.
Quote:
I am sorry I don't have good news on the oil pump gear. As I mentioned over in my truck thread in the Virtual Dragstrip section, I had a whine that I was attributing to the chain guide I installed in the timing cover. However after getting the oil pump out and looking at the gear, I believe the noise I hear is the oil pump gear. Or at least that is a possability. Here are the pictures of the oil pump gear after @ 1 hr 40 min run time. Gear pattern is wide across the gear face but it has already started cutting into the gear and I would suspect the cam as well. I will try and get Ryan's snake camera and see if we can look at the cam gear a little better.

I hope Doug sees this and chimes in on what he thinks, and what I should do next. I would guess reassemble evertything and run it for a while and pull it again. Maybe 500 miles or so? I did cut open the oil filter and found nothing inside to indicate my chain guide was a culprit.
