I don't know much about converters but I think there are two different stall rating numbers for them. Can anyone fill in the blanks here?

Thanks

Engine tune can have a bearing on stall speed.
If an engine is not tuned correctly, and has less torque at a given RPM, the stall speed will be lower than if the engine was making the torque it should.

There is not a huge dependence of stall speed on engine tune, unless you are WAY off.

Stall speed does not break in, so you get what you get.

Who built and specced the converter?

Lou

Well that hard to say. I was referred by a fellow slanter to other fellow slanter that had it. He had ordered this converter with a small hub and large trans spline, but when it came it had a small input spline. The converter company didn't want it back and sent him a new correct one with the same specs. His converter he says stalls at 3000 and flares to 3300. I would think mine should do close to the same.
I like the way this one drives on the street. I think I am going to keep it, but if it did stall higher I would go faster. I am hoping to take it out with the FX-1 and post some times. I have a feeling it'll be turning 14.99. I promise if it don't I won't lie. :D

2400 is still a big jump up from stock stall, so you'll see a good difference in perf.

Have fun!

I usually chip my good motor at 3400 on the trans brake. When I have the timing backed down for the nitrous, I have to lower the chip to 3000 because it won't hit the 3400 anymore.

My converter is set to flare to 4000 on the hose, the best I have stalled it at on motor is 3500.

What do you make of the slower mph?

What slower MPH? Do you mean the major drop from 87.6 to 87.5? That small amount could just be the difference in wind drag. A improvement of 3 full sec (18.55 to15.6) is great. Keep tweeking, I bet you can get it better, yet.

It looks to me like you have solid improvement all across the board.(60 ft , 1/8 , etc)

Look after the et and the trap time will come.

The large improvement in ETs and smaller improvement in trap times shows me you are making modest power improvements and huge improvements in driveability. Power is nothing without driveability.

Tuning is cool , eh?

work on the small hesiation at the start, i have found the cleaner you start really helps the ets at the end, try different starting rpms and stagger the first to second and second to third shift points, sometimes holding on for a higher rpm slows the cars ets

I read something about faster speeds at lower et's and the inverse relationship, somewhere here. I'm glad on how your car is coming along!

Bren, those i mprovements are pretty substantial! I think your new converter was the main improvement here. But the enormous improvement in ET and very slight MPH increase are a clue as to your path to a faster car. I tried to go back over this entire thread and find if you had a final number on where the cam is degreed, and could not find it. I kind of ran out of patience for the search by page 4. Your numbers suggest you are running out of horsepower at top end. Here are some possible causes:

1, Exhaust.
2. Carb choice and tuning,
3. Cam choice and timing.
4. Ignition break down.

A cam that is advanced will cause these kinds of numbers. A retarded cam comes on at the top end. An advanced cam has better low end torque, which it looks like is happening here. Excellent progress here!

Sam

What do you make of the slower mph?

Well took the car for another run. The sun was down and the temp was about 85 degrees with NO heat soak in the motor.
I also think the 15.6 run had the A/C running. I can't remember turning it off.
Today it was off.
FX1 results

1/4 mile 14.97 at 88.8mph
1000 ft 12.81
1/8 mile 9.61
330ft 6.37
60ft 2.24

I think the A/C was on before. I don't think the engine being colder and the outdoor temp being lower would make up that much.
No more test runs. I don't want the lose my 14 second car. :D

I dosen't give me the ride I was looking for but is OK.

Well, I would say that's serious progress! My guess is you can gain another 0.5 sec with more tuning, maybe including a cam timing change.

Congrats on the 14s,

Lou
