Well the truck ran fine all the way down to Knoxville for the last race. However Ryan was driving it! :D :D On the 1st or second run it barfed up something in number one cylinder and smashed the plug shut. Also had massive amounts of blow by so our racing was over for the weekend. But we still had a 500 mile trip home! After a few hiccups on the way we made it safely home in 15 hrs instead of the normal 9-10. :D :D

I have had an engine on a stand for over a year (Maybe 2!) and I decided to just get it ready before I pull the truck engine. Cam is a little big for the truck with an automatic but we shall see how it does. (Still a lawnmower cam though)

Here are a couple pictures before we do the swap.

Also this picture shows the "plastic" cam button that Matt Deemer has made up. When I installed mine and checked it I had just a tiny bit of clearance without doing any mods to the button. No chance of an oil leak at the screw that I would usually put there. Thanks Matt!

Engine has been swapped and it starts! And has oil pressure! :D :D After I finish my anger management course for dummies, I will post all about the adventure. Suffice it to say it did not go as planned. As a matter of fact it was so bad I may not even swap the 4 speed into my car this winter!

Well, I just finished up my anger management course so I will share what has transpired with the truck.
After limping home from Knoxville on 5 cylinders, the engine needed to come out of the truck. Since I have had and engine on an engine stand for the last 1 1/2 years I decided to go ahead and finish it up and drop it into the truck. Then take my time with the autopsy of the original engine.

The new engine had the crank reground, rods resized, and new rings, bearings..etc installed. What is odd is that I really took my time and measured everything on this engine. No plastigauge! All rod bearings, main bearings were measured and documented along with the ring gaps. Since I was doing such a bang up job, I figured I might as well go ahead and paint it all up and then it would be ready to install.

Once it was dropped into the truck I installed the pain in the drain headers and intake and then accessorized everything. Distributor, alternator, PS pump, radiator. Well let's spin it over and get some oil pressure. Oil pump was inspected and cleaned and packed with vasoline. Crank, Crank, Crank. Nothing. Well no problem, I'll start it up for a few seconds and it will pump right up. Wrong! 5 seconds, 10 seconds, nothing. Get out of truck and look on the floor. Guess what I saw? @ 4 quarts of oil pumped out the back of the engine and onto the floor. Oh Crap! I remembered that on this engine I wanted to clean out the main oil galley and I removed the pipe plug at the back of the engine. A year and a half ago!

So out came the radiator, distributor, motor mounts, PS pump...etc! Boy it seems like I just did this yesterday! :D Luckily I had just enough room to wiggle the engine up and over the frame without removing the headers. reach behind the block and verified my dumbness. Installed the plug and dropped it back onto the engine mounts and call it a day.

Next day I install just enough stuff to try and start it. Now I'm sure that I will have plenty of oil pressure. Wrong again! Nothing, zero, zippo. What in the world could be wrong now? Removed oil filter and it had oil in it. Maybe my gauge went bad? It was pretty cold too. Swap gauge, nothing! At this point I was contemplating a garage fire. I have good insurance, and I had 2, 5 gallon cans of gas in the garage. Then I figured with the way my luck was going, I would somehow light the Valiant on fire with all my tools, and the truck would be unharmed. So I gave up on that Idea, and went to the house more frustrated than ever.

Day 3, I head back to the garage and walked past the gas cans again, fighting a very strong urge , because I still didn't know what was happening. So I guess I will swap out the oil pump. Jack up passenger side of the engine and swap in a Dutra "good" pump. Crank Crank Crank! Nothing! So after just standing in the cold staring at the nicely painted engine for about 15 minutes, it dawned on me. Anyone dumb enough to leave the rear plug out of the block, should be smart enough to remember that he also took out the front one. Since it dumps into the timing cover and the oil returns to the pan, I didn't have a mess on the floor to clean up.

Sooooo! Now I get to remove the PS pump, Balancer, timing cover and timing chain. Install new plug and then reassemble! Boy it sure seems like I just did this a day or two ago. Plus who wants to break the timing cover and oil pan apart and try and get it sealed up? No one! But I did it anyway. And then I reassembled it again. If I do this one more time I will probably have all the bolt holes worn out! But finally after all of this, I had great oil pressure just cranking it over. Started it up and set the timing. Ran it up to temperature. All is well. Now I can finally get a good nights sleep!

PS. Now you know why I don't want to work on the Valiant! :D :D

Everyone's definition of fun is probably different. :D :D

It is highly likely that I won't make this same mistake again for the rest of my life. At least I hope not! :D

If you look at the first picture above. Look just above the #102 and through the timing gear hole you can just see where the plug should have been! :oops: :oops:

Sounds like my last week of work... Only my aggravation was on a Furd. Obviously not mine
Came in on the hook "wouldn't start". That was as simple as using the right key which was also on the same key ring as the one in the ignition. A chipped key vs a not chipped key.
Then onto the laundry list that was on the seat for when I figured out the no start. Tow ins like that piss me off because of the cost of fixing vs the cost of a tow.
If it wasn't for someone's stupidity they could have drove it in and saved $350.
Alot of the laundry list was pretty trivial and I ended up having to fix the rest of it in the process of fixing #2 on the list (#1 was the no start) #2 was a rotted off engine dipstick. #3 was a leaking trans dipstick tube (seeping they it but still in one piece)
The engine dipstick tube was actually missing a section that could only be seen thru the wheel well.
But Ford had one of their better ideas on how they routed it.
Besides it breaking off flush with the hole in the block meant for it, meant I had to pull the pan to get the rest out, I also got to pull the exhaust manifold and motor mount since the way it was routed there was no way humanly possible to snake the new one in between those two components without cutting the new tube.
The trans lines were crusty and I ended up replacing those because I'm sure the old ones would have leaked after the prying I had to do on them to get the pan out ... Then on to the trans pan which had to come off to drive the trans dipstick tube out... And pound sockets on every single trans pan bolt.... With a few trivial jobs here and there to take me off of it I spent most of a while week fighting this thing and it's rust.... Lota time with the acetylene torch in my hands to keep from breaking any fasteners in the teardown phase.... Your issue seems easier to deal with than Ford stupidity. And a newer truck than yours too. This was only a 2011 f250 4wd

Between home and my son's house we have a 83 d250 blown apart to the rolling frame that is going back together with all out of state-sourced rust free body parts that are currently all different colors. I've been talking to "dustless blasting" guys for a price to strip the different colors (and layers of more different colors on some panels) and get it resprayed all one color before bolting that one back together.
Why does it seem that this kind of project is more fun than what I went thru on the ford.....

Took the truck for a couple short runs and all seems well. Have a little leak at the rear of the valve cover. I am anxious to see if I have everything sealed up at the front timing cover / pan interface.
