It would, assuming that the ammeter itself is the only weak spot. For best protection, I would recommend that the bypass leg (with the diode) ALSO bypass the stock wiring and -especially- the bulkhead connections. In fact, 2 of my old cars had the bulkhead connectors bypassed because they started melting even before putting on the big alternators. IMO Chrysler wiring is NOT particularly poorly designed compared to other makers, but the bulkhead connector is definitely a point that was never expected to last 40 years (and may have been marginal even when new).
