Yep, seen it. Great movie. I think I should pick up the book. I'm not nearly as far from Wendover, Utah myself so getting there will be easier.

If the crank work to use Cheby rods is too much I'll just prep the stock rods the best I know and keep my fingers crossed. Cryo treatment is only $6 a rod!

I remember reading about a custom all aluminum body 170 powered slant that was at Bonneville a long time ago, mid 60s. It had a hyperpak intake and the carb was hacked out through the body. Anyone know anything about this? i believe it held a record briefly.

Sounds like the slant powered lotus. Here is an old article and pics.

Joshua, You don't need to weld the crank. Doc gave me this idea once. You do the journal in a journal trick.
This is what I did, I found some used carrillo nascar rods on ebay, 6.125" length, honda rod journal 1.888" I think. 550 grams, Carr bolts. They only use them for one race then they replace them. Paid $80 for a set. I bushed them down to .866" on the pin end. I know you already have pistons but with this setup you use vw forged pistons with a 1.375" comp. ht. and it comes out to about zero deck ht.
You could also do this with the chevy 5.7" rods but I would use the 2.00" small journal size to give more shoulder for the rods.

I'd do that, but I already have custom Venolia pistons with 1.770" CD. I haven't found anyone that knows how wide the cheek of the crank needs to be to support the side of the rod. The cheek has to be larger than the bearing insert is thick, but by how much? If I use a 2" Chevy journal I only get about .090" wide cheek and the bearing shell takes up about .060" of that. Is the .030" I have left enough to adequately support the rod?
