got the timing set to 0
runs pretty good
but i need to adjust the carb cause its still backfiring through the carb a bit and you have to somewhat toggle the gas so it wont bog and die

and what does it mean to have black crap coming out of the exhaust pipes....not just the normal burning oil stuff but like serious stains on the ground that looks like a firecracker went off
i guess some valve seals are bad but im not sure...

That black stuff is from running rich, like when the your over choked on start up. You probably got a ton of fuel in the exhaust system from trying to start it. Did you get the leak fixed in the carb?

Can't you set the timing to 5 or 10 degrees? That would help the back firing.....

unless a valve is stuck and hanging open. Then you need to set the valve lash to get the valves closed which will keep it from back firing.

well according to OE its supposed to be 0
but i bet retarding it wouldnt hurt.....
i didnt think the black stuff was oil but id rather be wrong in that case anyday

and the carb wasnt leaking after all....i just left something in the wasy of the return spring....like a dummy

Retarding it would spoil driveability, performance, and economy. Try setting it at 5° before TDC (advanced from factory spec).

Yes, I know it is suppose to be 0 but I run mine at 16 degrees initial timing..... mine used to ping all the time at zero degrees. Do you have to run the stock smog equipment where you live?

I rebuilt mine and it is now 9.5 to 1 compression. No more smog system, just basic and stable like the older 60's cars. I did keep the charcoal filter vapor system. No more pinging like when it was at 0 degrees. I am at 55 degrees total timing at 2500 rpm, 60 mph. It is a rocket and has loads of power and gets 25 mpg. A distributor recurve and the 9.5 compression really makes the SL6 come to life.

Click on the red link below to check out my engine. It has been two years since the rebuild and I have a little over 50,000 miles on it.
