Had to drop my car off at the shop today, for its annual safety inspection. Out front was a 1 ton dump truck, getting work done for something. Bed was up, and I had nothing better to do, so I wandered over. While looking at it, I noticed that the fuel filler necks were likewise horizontal. Only more so than your A bodies--these were two to three feet of flatness.

Now, I don't read truck forums, and I don't pump gas for a living; but I assumed that this setup works without undue fuel splashing. So I took a closer look. One tank had the filler neck to a slightly lower spot on the tank, leaving some expansion space above it; but the other tank was rather flat. I suspect the secondary tank was an auxilary tank, as it did not appear to have high pressure lines to it. I checked, and it did have the unleaded fuel restrictor.

The only thing that stood out was the vent line. On each filler neck was a rather large vent, going up and ending just behind the restrictor plate (so the fuel nozzle would "see" that vented air). Like half-inch internal diameter. One tank did appear to have the vent line above the neck in the tank; but the other didn't.

Has anyone played with using a larger vent line? Not trivial I'm guessing. But I can't tell from the photo what size vent line is used on those A bodies--it looks small, but it's hard to gauge size.

The 65 Dart has a stock 1/4 inch dia. gas tank vent line coming off the gas filler tube..

For the aftermarket restrictor just installed, the vent line is 1 inch away...on the gas cap side.

I'm glad I found this thread! I have the same problem on my '67 Valiant.

Can someone tell me the diameter of the filler nozzle hole and how far down does it install? I think I can fab one of the for less than the cost of shipping.

Purdy please? :D

Reference the attachment & note that the restrictor installs 2.5 inches down from the point where the gas cap gasket seats on the filler tube.

I believe the hole diameter is 7/8 inch dia however I suggest you measure the diameter of a gas pump nozzle to verify it will fit inside a 7/8 diameter hole.

If you building the restrictor yourself consider the spring loaded flapper that covers the opening when the gas pump nozzle is removed.....it helps minimize gas leaking out the vent when the gas tank is nearly full and sloshing.

I mean, if I owned an A body, I'd probably would want a fix too; but just not filling to the top seems like a cheap/easy fix.

Unless your gas gauge doesn't work like mine doesn't......

I fill the tank so I know I won't run out.
I second that.
