Good morning race fans! :D

I'm getting packed up now and plan to leave here no later than 10:00. It's about a 7 hour drive, so that will put me at the track right about the time they open the gates.

See you there!! :D :D

Thank goodness ya warned 'em Mater. Attention all Elk Creek racers do not lend the Mater your pocket knife! If he promises ya food just figure a delay of about a year or so.

Good Luck to everyone attending Elk Creek.

I need to see actual video Footage at Rob at a slant race, with a Slant car, actually participating in rounds or it didn't happen.

I am sure Ryan or Whitney can Document at least one competition run of Rob.. Time Trials don't count.

Spoke to Gary Bruner about 7:00PM and they cancelled the race tonight due to rain.

Ryan did make it there, but it wasn't easy! He started down the road and the transmission in the Dakota tow vehicle would not shift out of 1st gear. So we loaded everything into the Dart and hooked the race car and trailer up to his Swinger. And down the road he went. I gues it made it up over the mountain Ok.

Just made it back home via tow truck! Must have been some Friday the 13th bad luck for me.

Traveling down I-40 west of Winston-Salem, when all of a sudden I hear a clunk and the steering goes crazy on me. Initially thought I might have a front tire blowout. Pulled off on side of highway and can't see anything wrong with the car. Tried getting back up to speed, and it sounds and feels like the front tires are going in opposite directions. Pull over again, jack the car up, my passenger side front wheel bearing is toast. Only thing keeping it on the spindle was the brake caliper.

My apologies to Ron, really was looking forward to the race.

Ruh Rough....

Sorry to hear about the rain and the difficulties attempting to get there.

Hope tomorrow is better..

Rob Simmons hasn't raced yet ... at least not in my book.. no official video footage :-)

"I went to a race and it was rained out" doesn't count.

Brian - I am glad you did not hurt yourself or the car..

Double check all that assembly work.

Best of luck for a better day tomorrow.

Post subject:  Canceled

Saturday, The track was going to let our group run both Slant 6 races. However they canceled everything early this morning due to rain. I got a message from Ron Hamby and he said that it was nice at noon, and they could have run.

Yeah,... A little disappointing... :(

It's not so much about drag racing as it is about bench racing with friends anyway.

Sorry to hear about your bearing Brian. We were all wondering about you. There is almost zero cell phone reception at the track.

I feel really bad for Ryan and Whitney. What a trip! Seeing them pull in Friday night with the Valiant on the trailer towed by the Dart was inspiring! :D

I waited around for them for awhile Saturday before leaving, but they had more problems and we didn't know about it because of the lack of cell phone reception. I hope they made it home safely!

Racers that were at the track:

Ron Hamby - 66 Dart
Gary Bruner - 62 Valiant "Half Hemi"
Courtney Bruner - 68(?) Valiant Meril's cream puff
Meril Bruner - 80's "Funny Truck"
Jack Everhardt - 75 Duster
Mike Andreas - 85 D100
Ryan Covalt - 62 Valiant
Whitney Covalt - 72 Dart
Rob Simmons - 74 Duster

Mark Charapich showed up Saturday morning in his very sweet 60 Valiant.

Knoxville is next! I'll start a thread for it.

Here are a couple pics from this weekend.

Well, we made it back safely tonight. Definitely an interesting trip. For as many problems as we had Whitney and I both still enjoyed our time at Elk Creek. I got to meet some new people and see some new cars and got to do some wrenching with Mark. He helped me get the Dart started without using the keys (since i lost them) by removing the ignition switch and "modifying". The lock assembly. After we finally got everything running again we drove around the country side just to see what was there. Its a very beautiful area and it was nice just to cruise in the dart and see what there is to see.

Here is a quick list of the issues I had on the first day of the trip.
1. Speeding ticket $111 (1st one in about 8 yrs).
2. 2 miles into the trip Stantkota transmission decides it no longer wants to shift (making some bad sounds).
Hooked the trailer and carto the Dart...... Somewhat concerned.
3. Rain=no race
4. Lost keys to the Dart after arriving at the hotel (never lost car keys in my life). Police helped me break into the car, Mark helped me get it running and the Hamby's guarded the race car until I could get back for it.
5. Electric fan quit working. Was able to get home without any major overheating.
Even with all the problems we still enjoyed our time with everyone. I wish we couldve spent more time with everyone but it wasn't meant to be. I want to especially thank Ron and Kay Hamby for staying at the track to guard the Race car while I was stranded at the hotel. They waited may hours while we got the car running again. I also want to thank Mark and the Bruners for helping us get back on the road again. I really hope to see every one again soon and get to do some racing next time.

Here are a few pictures from the weekend.

The Dart pretending it is a truck again. I originally only planned on pulling my lightweight trailer with my atv. This was a big step up in weight but the Dart handled it pretty good. It handled the mountains better than expected and averaged 14mpg. With a few minor changes I think the dart could tow the Race car regularly...... Or at least until I get a transmission in the slantkota.

Thanks for posting Ryan. I'm glad you made it home safely and made the best of your trip. It was definitely great to see you and Whitney again!

Are you going to try to make it to any other races this season other than the one near you? Or is it too soon after this adventure to ask that question?
