I do have the factory manual, just not the electrical portion yet.

After taking the carb off and doing some more adjustments per the factory manual and setting the step-up piston back to qualifying gap of 0.035", i put the carb back on. I am having trouble getting it to run properly. It's really starting to confuse me. The idle RPM is just all over the place. 780-600 one time, restart the car and it's up at 900. I don't know what to do. At my "good" mixture setting I can't really get the rpm that low since the screw comes off the stop.

Oh and I'm noticing the fast idle cam is getting stuck under the fast idle screw when it should be at curb idle. It gets caught Right before the recess for the choke off position. This happens anytime the throttle moves. I think this is a big issue as it makes me idle around 1000 rpm and I can only fix it by hand under the hood.

I'm thinking that if the carb is the problem, it's got to be an issue with the step-up piston, metering rods or the fact I'm using the lifter arm from a 318 BBD. In order to eliminate the carb from the possible list of reasons my idle is awful I want to get another from a pick-and-pull. Does anyone know what are the chances I could find a Super Six set up around Portland, OR with the carb still on it?

I moved on to my valve adjustments only to notice there is hardly any oil flowing under the valve cover, I removed the whole rocker assembly and push rods to clean them.

I will be educating myself on recurving distributors and checking for timing chain slack during the week.

Any ideas what to do?

You would have to talk to the mom and pop junkyards that are off the web..car-part.com says you will be taking a trip to washington or idaho for one at this time...Wildcat or All American Classics may have something on the shelf but the price will be right up there.

Man, that's tough. You were telling me that when I was over in Salem. I found two slants near me using Row-52.com, it's worth a check.

Are there other carbs can I look out for that would be compatible with what I have?

The manual said that the super six BBD was new for '77, but that doesn't mean they didn't recycle carb parts from another model year. I'm afraid you'll simply have to sit down and read all the relevant pages in the carb manula, to see if you can find the identical part number. :(

That is a good point, I never thought of just finding the rods and arm in another carb. I was actually wondering what other completely different carbs I could look for.
