I remember seeing (once upon a time) a modification to the stamped steel open impellers that made them more like the cast (iron or plastic) impellers.

All you did was rivet a round back plate to them...………..

Under the heading "other stuff", I converted over to an electric pump with a speed control system that also controls the fan with various set points. that being the case, I got to ditch my OEM WP and free up some space and allow other accessory configurations.. I plumbed the electric pump into the back side of the cavity in the OP's first pic series. I was not comfortable with the water flow path/characteristics that would present, so I formed up a billet nylon water divertor for less turbulent flow, and dead space. Its not on the road yet, so i have no idea what the end result will be.
Still haven't figured out how to post pics, here so a verbal description is all i can share.
Is that a Davies Craig water pump setup? Or some other brand?
Yes

Just in case anyone was interested. FlowKooler has a Slant Six water pump. It is # 1678. Direct replacement.
I am posting pics of the impeller. 16 vane, billet aluminum impeller.
I put one on my race motor, but I can't say for certain it is worth the extra money or not (engine is still waiting for the car).

If you are having problems, can't hurt to try one. What did that set you back and where did you get it?

I called Summit Racing. FlowKooler lists it on their website, but Summit doesn't actually carry it. I ordered it and they had it drop shipped from FlowKooler. Cost me $99 total and free shipping. It took about a week to get it.

It's amazing how little anyone knows about water pumps....I sure don't know much. The common gospel seems to be 'buy whatever is shiniest and costs the most'.

It'd be interesting to 'dyno' test a variety of pump vanes to see how much they flow and how much power they consume. You can be sure the big automakers have done that...but they don't share it!

And yes....the truly best pump would be one that is driven at different speeds based on water temp and flow needs.

…how much cavitation they cause, what other flow artifacts they create…
